Netflix drops 'Trese' trailer; to debut this coming June

By Bong Godinez

The trailer for the supernatural anime series, Trese, has been released by Netflix Philippines in anticipation of its upcoming premiere on June 11.

Trese is based on the cult hit Filipino graphic novel written by Budjette Tan and illustrated by Kajo Baldisimo.

The trailer uploaded on YouTube begins with an image of a train suddenly stopping at the Guadalupe Station.

“Bigla na lang daw tumigil ang tren sa may bandang tulay ng Guadalupe. At nakita na lang ng service crew na ganito. Nagkalat ang dugo, walang mga bangkay. At sandamukal na missing persons report,” said the narration.

The trailer likewise gives viewers the first glimpse of Alexandra Trese, the anime's protagonist who is destined to fight the evil supernatural creatures around Metro Manila.

Actress Liza Soberano was tapped to voice the Filipino version of the series, while Canadian actress-model Shay Mitchell will lend her voice for the English version.

Released in 2005, Trese is a dark fantasy comic book that incorporates Filipino folklore and mythology in its horror-crime narrative.

In an interview with GMA Lifestyle in November, Budjette shared how the Netflix deal came about.

“The pitch was done by our producers from Base Entertainment. Tanya Yuson and Shanty Harmaryn did all the hard work of pitching 'Trese' to different studios around the world for over seven or eight years,” he said.

“I was excited to know that there was a possibility that 'Trese' might get adapted into a TV show or a movie. And I was also heartbroken every time it got rejected.”

The Netflix partnership was sealed in 2018, making it the first Filipino comic book to be adapted into anime by the streaming platform.

Budjette is hoping that Trese would pave the way for more Filipino comic books to gain international recognition.

“I hope that the story of Trese will show young and old comic book creators that there is a way for their stories to reach a wider audience, a global audience,” said Budjette.

“We do have fantastic stories that I feel will blow away the minds and inspire readers and viewers around the world.”
