Unhappy with your mobile service? The Mobile Number Portability Act can help solve that problem

By Bong Godinez

Three of the country's major telco firms - Smart Telecommunications, Globe Telecom Inc., and new player, DITO Telecommunity Corp. - have joined forces to enable the public to jump networks seamlessly.

The venture, dubbed as Telecommunications Connectivity Inc. (TCI), is in line with the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) Act or Republic Act No. 11202 enacted in January 2019.

Under this new law, mobile phone users can keep their numbers even when they transfer to another service provider, or switch subscriptions from postpaid to prepaid, or vice-versa.

The MNP will be rolled out on September 30, with the TCI anticipating about one million subscribers availing of the service.

It was reported that the three telco firms invested about P120 million to establish the service.

Users with financial obligations to their original service provider are required to settle their liabilities first to enable them to switch networks.

Companies that violate the MNP Act may be slapped with fines from P10,000 up to P1 million, and franchise cancellation.
