A man from Leeds, England just literally “owned a piece of history” after winning an auction. What historical lot did the lucky guy score? A slice from the 1981 wedding cake of Prince Charles and Princess Diana!

On August 11, the well-preserved slice of the royal wedding cake was auctioned by the Dominic Winter Auctioneers.

The piece of cake was originally owned by Moyra Smith, a member of the Queen Mother's household at Clarence House.

It is said to be a slice of one of the 23 official wedding cakes from Prince Charles and Princess Diana's wedding at the St. Paul Cathedral on July 29, 1981.

The 40-year-old slice features a sugared onlay of the royal coat-of-arms in gold, red, blue, and silver, a silver horseshoe, leaf spray, and white decorative icing.

Preserved with cling film or plastic wrap and kept inside an old cake tin, it has a handwritten label that said, “Handle with care. Prince Charles and Princess Diane's Wedding Cake,” and signed by Moyra Smith on July 29, 1981.

It was reportedly sold to the Dominic Winter Auctioneers in 2008.

It was expected to fetch around £300 to £500 (PhP 20,987-PhP 34,978). But much to the auction house's surprise, the winning bid was a whopping £1,850 or PhP 129,420.

The man who won the auction was Gerry Layton, a luxury boat charterer who bid online.

Layton has reportedly included the slice of cake in his will, along with his estate, to go to charity after his death.

"I also thought that I could put it up as a raffle prize with some of the money going to Centrepoint, which Princess Di was patron of," said Layton.

Although it is not the first slice of royal wedding cake to be auctioned, the piece of Princess Diana and Prince Charles's cake is said to be a standout for its size.

"I've not seen anyone else trying to sell anything like this," auctioneer Chris Albury

said in an interview. "It's quite a lump."

Aside from a slice of their royal wedding cake, Princess Diana's wedding gown also recently made headlines after his sons Prince Harry and Prince William agreed to have it publicly displayed at the Kensington Palace.

Plus, a car that was given by Prince Charles to Princess Diana as an engagement gift also recently sold at an auction for more than £52,000 or PhP 3,637,756.
