Floyd Mayweather Jr. calls Philippines his 'adoptive home'

By Nherz Almo

Boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr. is back in the Philippines for another business deal with beauty and health brand Frontrow.

The 45-year-old American boxer led the inauguration of the brand's newest building in Quezon Avenue, Quezon City yesterday, September 28.

Then, he met the media in a press conference prepared for him.

Mayweather took the side trip to Manila after his fight against mixed martial arts fighter Mikuru Asakura in Saitama Super Arena in Japan last Sunday, September 25.

“I feel like that the Philippines is my adoptive home. When I come here, you guys embrace me with open arms and treat me so well, it is so nice.”

He also mentioned meeting his old rival, his fellow retired boxing champ Manny Pacquiao.

“Just the other day, I was in Tokyo competing in another boxing exhibition. It was great to see the eight-division world champion, Manny Pacquiao. He's such a great guy, such a great champion. He represents the Filipinos, the Filipino culture like no other. So I have to take my hand out to Manny Pacquiao, great guy, unbelievable athlete.”

When asked if there would be a chance for him and Manny to be fighting in the ring again, Mayweather immediately answered, “Absolutely not.”

He reasoned, “I've already had my hard fights from 1987 to 2017. Now everything is just entertaining people and just having fun.”

He then added about his encounter with Manny in Japan, “I'm glad that they had a chance to add Manny Pacquiao to the whole entertainment piece. Manny is such a legend. He's such a great fighter. I'm happy that we were able to share the ring together and the world saw two legends clashing head-to-head.”

However, he reiterated that now he's just focusing on giving entertainment to people, especially his fans, by doing exhibition fights.

“It's always great to go to Tokyo and just to travel and embrace the fans and embrace so many different people around the world. You know, around the world, they get the chance to see Floyd Maweather when I was getting beaten when I was fighting and competing at my highest level. But now, I'm doing small exhibitions. I'm happy I get to travel all over the world and still give people a glimpse of me.”
