Jackie Rice: Budding chef and future businesswoman

Jackie Rice is more than the pretty face or hateful villain we see on television. Off screen, she wears many other hats as she constantly works towards expanding her skills and trying out more things.

She proved this last year when she took a four-month culinary course at the School of Knowledge and Development (SKD) Academy for Culinary Arts in Quezon Avenue. This is one of the steps she’s taking towards her long-time dream of putting up her own business.

“Ginawa ko siya kasi gusto ko gumawa ng business. Ayaw ko naman sumugal na wala akong alam sa ginagawa ko,” she said.

Though she admits to not being very fond of cooking, she saw this opportunity as a way to equip herself with the tools she would eventually need.

“Hindi ko naman hilig magluto pero gusto ko kasi magka-business soon so pag mag-i-invest ako, at least alam ko 'yung inventory. Lahat gusto ko 'yung alam ko 'yung pinapasok ko. Ako 'yung type na ganun eh, na di ko papasukin ang bagay na di ko alam,” she disclosed.

She specialized in French cuisine so she learned how to cook and prepare beef and chicken stocks, thickening and flavoring agents, as well as mayonnaise and noodles from scratch.

The actress also shared that the experience was both fun and challenging. Fun because she did it with friends, and challenging because she admits to not being excellent at the kitchen.

“Dati (ko) pa (plano magka-business). May friends ako na mahilig magluto so sabay sabay kami. Parang bonding na rin. Mahirap siya eh. Nag-eenjoy ako dahil masaya mga kasama ko. Noong nagluto ako, okay 'yung ending, okay 'yung final result. So 'yun, nag-enjoy ako kahit mahirap siya, kahit wala akong alam,” she said.

Jackie also recalled that it surprised her when she topped some of the recitation exams. It also pleased her that the chef instructor and her fellow students liked what she cooked.
