During a chat with GMANetwork.com, Jose tells their current set-up now that Maria is with her family in Japan.

"She actually left for Japan in the first week of April to see her parents.

"So, LDR [long-distance relationship] kami."

Jose clarified that Maria has been living in the Philippines for years now and she's only coming back to Japan for vacations.

"She's actually based here na po. She has a few businesses here in Manila.

The actor also shared how despite them living separately, he invited Maria to stay with him and his family during quarantine.

"We don't actually live together yet pero nung nagkaroon ng GCQ I made her stay na rin in the house with my family.

"She has her own condo kasi sa Pasay area.

"I made her stay here muna. Enjoy naman siya dito with my parents.

Jose said Maria is actually already close to his parents.

"Bonding na rin [kami] every lunch and dinner, kwentuhan, afternoon drink with my parents."

He admitted that initially, he worried about his girlfriend traveling back to Japan during the current pandemic.

"Nung mga April she was really contemplating going back to Japan since her parents live there and she has a bar there.

"We kind of had a small argument about her going back to Japan.

Eventually, they reached a compromise and he agreed that it would be good for Maria to be with her own family for vacation.

"But I kinda understood her side naman din kasi nandoon naman 'yung parents niya."

He added, "Nandoon din 'yung mga friends niya, 'yung business niya.

"So, I understood her side naman na during pandemic times you want to be with your family.

"Happy naman siya here with us, pero I knew she wanted to visit her parents also. Her brother's wife gave bith last month. [She] runs her bar.

"I allowed her to go back naman. I don't know yet when she can come back kasi bawal pa 'yung ibang foreigners pumasok."

He also gave advice on how to handle a long distance relationship.

"Medyo challenging now pero we still keep the communication.

'Yun 'yung key kapag LDR, as long as we video call every night, we call each other, update each other.

"It's challenging, don't get me wrong. She's been gone for maybe almost two months now. It's been a long time.

In the end, he reiterated the importance of communication in every long-distance relationship, "Nami-miss ko na rin siya. But communication is really the key to make your long distance relationship continue."
