Singapore for First Time Traveler: A no-fuss guide to exploring the 'Lion City'

By Aedrianne Acar

Everyone knows that Singapore is among the top tourist destination in the Asia Pacific region. What's interesting to note though is that about 18.5 million tourists have been to the country according to the 2019 preliminary figures issued by the Singapore Tourism Board. That is already more than three times their estimated population!

This writer went on a four-day trip to Singapore recently to experience first hand what the city has to offer. And even though it was nerve-wracking in the beginning as I was going solo on this trip, it was also exciting to explore a new place I only hear about from friends but have never been to.

Iconic Statue

First on my itinerary was to see the biggest Merlion sculpture located on Sentosa Island. It would be such a shame not to see Singapore's iconic statue that is also a symbol of their humble beginnings as a fishing village when they were used to be called Temasek.

And since I am already at Sentosa, I couldn't pass on the chance to try the cable car. Now, this is something I wouldn't recommend to people who are deathly afraid of heights. But hanging up there, 300 feet above sea level, gives you a different perspective and it will literally take your breath away as you marvel at the view.

Theme park

Kids and kids at heart will surely have a blast exploring Univeral Studios with its 24 rides, shows, and attractions in seven themed zones. I know I did! Here's a cool tip: don't forget to check out their site for ticket deals and other feature updates.

Retail therapy

If you're looking to update your wardrobe, head on to Orchard Road and you wouldn't be disappointed with their wide array of flagship stores and designer boutiques.

And after an intense day of shopping. the street has quite a number of restaurants for you to choose from. Or you can try Singapore's iconic ice cream sandwich sold on the streets. Imagine a block of ice cream wrapped in your choice of rainbow-colored bread of wafer on a hot and tiring day.

Ooh, snap!

There are a lot of places to see and visit in Singapore. Take for example Marina Bay Sands, the luxury hotel and resort designed by Architect Moshe Safdie. Just make sure you don't forget to take a picture with you in it.

Now if somebody were to ask me if I would like to go back to visit Singapore, my answer would be a no-brainer because I haven't really seen and experienced everything. There's definitely more to explore in Singapore.
