Top places to see in these visa-free South American countries

With the immense popularity of Kapuso teleseryes in countries like Peru and Ecuador today, more people are becoming curious about South America.

If the thought of flying there has crossed your mind, then you're in luck because Philippine passport holders aren't required to get a visa to enter some countries in this region.

Here are a few places you might want to include in your itinerary:

Machu Picchu, Peru

Ask anyone about what to see in Peru and the top answer you will get is Machu Picchu. Located in Cusco, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was declared as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007.

Rainbow Mountain, Peru

Another Cusco attraction that is gaining attention is Rainbow Mountain, locally known as Vinicunca or Montaña de Siete Colores. The mountain's different colors are caused by its various mineralogical composition, and are most obvious during the dry season.

Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

At 10,582 square kilometers, Salar de Uyuni is the largest salt flat in the world. You can get a day tour here, which includes stops in the Train Cemetery and Palacio del Sal, and take as many photos as you can while doing crazy poses.

Valle de la Luna, Bolivia

As its name suggests, Valle de la Luna or Moon Valley in the capital city of La Paz is simply out of this world. Persistent clay erosion in the area created the tall spires, resulting to a moon-like landscape.

Ciudad Mitad del Mundo, Ecuador

Just north of Quito is Ciudad Mitad del Mundo, which houses a 30-meter tall monument that marks the middle of the equator. Guests can have their photo taken with one foot in the northern hemisphere, and the other in the south, as represented by a line drawn on the ground.

Basilica del Voto Nacional, Ecuador

Towering over the historic center of Quito is the Basilica del Voto Nacional, considered as the largest neo-Gothic basilica of the new world. Guests can access the top of the towers for a fee, and have a bird's eye view of the city and surrounding mountains. The basilica remains unfinished, and legend has it that the end of the world will happen once it is completed.

Monserrate, Colombia

For a sweeping view of Bogota, head to Monserrate and take the funicular or cable car. At the summit is a church with a shrine dedicated to El Señor Caido, a few restaurants, and souvenir shops.

Museo Botero, Colombia

Among the numerous museums in the La Candelaria neighborhood of Bogota is Museo Botero, which houses the works of famous Colombian artist Fernando Botero. He also donated 85 artworks by other artists, and all can be viewed free of charge.

Christ the Redeemer, Brazil

Also listed as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, the Christ the Redeemer statue has been a iconic landmark in Rio de Janeiro. It is located at the peak of the Corcovado mountain overlooking the city, and also offers a view of the nearby Sugarloaf Mountain.

Iguazu Falls, Brazil

Although majority of Iguazu Falls is on Argentina, you can also view it from Brazilian state of Parana. Visitors are provided with a walkway along the canyon for a closer look of the largest waterfall system in the world.
