Change is hard. Transformation is harder.

Change is unpredictable, unexpected, random, oftentimes dictated by outside forces, natural or otherwise. Transformation is planned, deliberate, and studied, usually involving creative minds who have come together and agreed on one unified course of action.

Change can happen in an instant. Transformation takes time. Change can be triggered by a single event or situation or person. Transformation is initiated by a series of calculated steps, usually carried out based on a timeline set by a group of persons who share a common interest and goal.

For GMA Artist Center, the hard-working talent management arm of GMA Network, what it needed was both change and transformation, an image overhaul that was both sensible and sensical. The kind transformation that will bring the group to new heights and represent its new goals and aspirations.

Since changing the name to Sparkle, it has stayed on its promise to light a fun and exciting spark in the entertainment industry while evolving to fit the ever-changing new media and digital landscape.

No one understands Sparkle’s big transformation better than the vice president of Sparkle herself, the indefatigable Joy Marcelo, the ultimate power woman who has initiated big, bold moves to take her group to places they have never been before.

“It’s been two years now since we became ‘Sparkle.’ Big things have been happening for the past two years, it will just get bigger,” she says.

Joy Marcelo, who the Sparkle staff and stars have taken to calling “Ms. Joy,” would be first to say that Sparkle’s growth did not happen overnight. But she’s optimistic that their new strategies and plans would spark a bigger wave that would be seen and felt beyond the borders of the Philippines.

“We hope to be more known globally with all the new things that we will be doing,” adds Joy. “We will also have several launches planned. Magugulat na lang kayo."

And fans have started to notice those big changes. Just take a look at three of Sparkle’s biggest TV couples making fans swoon: Barbie Forteza and David Licauco, Julie Anne San Jose and Rayver Cruz, Bianca Umali and Ruru Madrid. They bring in viewership and endorsements. They cause fans to come out of their homes and line up for hours during fans’ day or movie premiere nights. They make TV viewing exciting and happy and worthwhile again.

It was through the hit series Maria Clara at Ibarra (2022) that the love team of David Licauco, who got the moniker “Pambansang Ginoo” from the show, and Barbie Forteza started. When the show started on October 3, 2022, no one imagined the impact that it would have not just on casual viewers but on people from all walks of life.

Starring Julie Anne San Jose and Dennis Trillo in the titular roles, with Barbie as a Gen-Z nurse named Klay who got transported into the world of Jose Rizal’s famous novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, Maria Clara at Ibarra completely changed how Filipinos spent their nights. Once again, people were tuned in to their television sets, watching how the love story of Maria Clara and Crisostomo Ibarra unfolded, hanging on to every moment of the series.

With the success of the show came the unexpected rise of FiLay, the nickname that fans came up with for the "tandem" of David's Fidel and Barbie's Klay. At the start of the series, David and Barbie, like everyone else, never thought that their characters would click and generate so much buzz on social media.

“Plinano talaga namin ‘to, talagang masterminds talaga kami ng love team [namin],” Barbie says in jest during her shoot for this Kapuso Profiles feature at Citadines Roces in Quezon City.

Turning serious, Barbie is the first to admit that even she, who has more than a decade of acting experience under her belt, did not expect that her love team with David would become one of the hottest love teams of this generation.

“Hindi, actually, hindi namin talaga ini-expect kasi prior to ‘Maria Clara at Ibarra,’ galing din kami sa show together, e, ’yung ‘Mano Po,’ kami rin ’yung huling nagka-work talaga,” she recalls.

In Mano Po Legacy: The Family Fortune (2022), Barbie played the lead role of Steffanie “Steffy” Dy, while David portrayed Anton Sy Chan. Steffy was a typical Binondo girl who got entangled in the lives of ultra-rich Chinoys when she became the personal assistant of Christine Chan (Sunshine Cruz), who thought that her nephew, Anton, should be the one to inherit the family’s business as the first legitimate child of her deceased brother.

Although Mano Po Legacy: The Family Fortune was the first time the public got a glimpse of David and Barbie together, they didn’t see the chemistry between the two bright stars until they were cast in Maria Clara at Ibarra.

Barbie continues, “So dito sa [Maria Clara at Ibarra] talagang walang expectations kasi wala naman anything na nangyari doon sa ‘Mano Po’ between the two of us, ’yung characters namin. So, parang dito sa ‘Maria Clara at Ibarra,’ hindi rin naman ’yun ’yung naging focus nung initial story, ’di ba?”

“Sobrang nag-click na lang talaga tapos mas doon na rin umikot ’yung istorya, tapos consistent ’yung support ng mga tao, kaya parang mas lalong nakaka-overwhelm for the both of us kasi hindi talaga siya inaasahan.”

The story of Maria Clara at Ibarra began with Klay trying to navigate the world of Maria Clara in the Spanish-occupied Philippines in the 19th century. As the story moved forward, the viewers gradually gravitated toward Klay and Fidel’s tender moments.

It wasn’t through their friends, their coworkers, nor their managers that Barbie and David, whom their fans fondly called BarDa, found out that their second series together was a hit. They learned about the hot reception of the people to their love team through the video-sharing application TikTok, where users continuously reposted their on- and off-cam moments together.

David says with a smile as he looks back on those times, “I think nung nakikita ko na siya sa TikTok kasi, ’di ba, kapag lagi ka na sa TikTok, it means that people like it, ’di ba? So, I think, doon ko na-realize na, ‘Ah!’”

Barbie realized that their love team hit fever pitch during the episode where Fidel gave his handkerchief to a crying Klay in the forest. She says, “Nung time na ‘yun, ang daming nag-tweet, nung episode na ’yun. Tapos nung parang nag-bow siya sa akin sa pag-save kay Ibarra from the buwaya, kasi ’yun ’yung time na nag-switch talaga ’yung character ni Fidel from ’yung arrogant na mayabang na negosyante tapos doon, nag-bow siya kay Klay.

For more than a decade in the industry, Barbie has been partnered with a lot of actors — Joshua Dionisio in Reel Love Presents: Tween Hearts (2010), Andre Paras in That’s My Amboy (2016), and with Ken Chan, Jak Roberto, Addy Raj, and Ivan Dorschner in Meant To be (2017). David, she admits, is different from all the other actors that she had been paired with.

“I would consider David one of the most sincere leading men I’ve worked with, kasi pag nag-i-interview kami, totoo ’yung mga sinasabi niya ha. Ako nga medyo loko-loko pa, e, pero siya totoo talaga ’yung sinasabi niya. Mararamdaman mo ’yung sincerity talaga sa kanya, and ’yung walang halong ka-showbiz-an,” Barbie says matter-of-factly.

“We have to definitely look out for [Barbie]. She has more to give, hindi lang ’yung minahal niyo na si Klay sa ‘Maria Clara [at Ibarra]. Meron pa siyang maibubuga na mas malaki, na mas exciting for Pulang Araw. Siguro si David, isa sa mga taong pinaka, ’pag tinitingnan ko hanggang ngayon, kinikilig pa rin ako. He has that quality in him na kahit matanda, bata, teenager, kinilig. For me, he’s one of the best leading men in town na meron pa, madami pang pwedeng ibigay.”

As much as he is delighted to have the limelight on him and Barbie, David admits that he once entertained the idea of quitting showbiz if Maria Clara at Ibarra did not take off. Before the series started, David was already busy with his businesses.

“Siguro ngayon nakatambay ako sa bahay, tulog, ganun. Hindi, joke lang, nagwo-work. Actually, prior to ‘Maria Clara at Ibarra,’ sabi ko nga baka last ko na ’yun kasi parang na-takeover na nung ’yung liking ko at love ko sa business ’yung pag-a-artista but ‘Maria Clara at Ibarra’ happened and nag-work ’yung love team namin,” he candidly says.

“I’m here, getting interviewed by you, guys. I mean, I’m super thankful kasi ’yung mga ganitong opportunity, rare lang, and also, to be love teamed with Barbie, e, siya ’yung pinakamagaling na artista.”

As David slowly becomes serious about his career, Barbie’s comedic instinct kicks in and she chimes in, “Pinaka-hot.”  David then picks up her cue and continues showing her with compliments, “Pinaka-sexy, pinakamaganda, wala ka na talagang hahanapin pa, di ba?”

For someone who doesn’t expect to be in the limelight at all, David is just thankful that he got the chance to work with Barbie, one of her generation’s greatest actresses. “Dati nga, nag-audition ako sa show mo, ‘Meant To Be,’ ’di ba? Nahihiya pa ako sa kanya, e, ngayon, hindi na ako nahihiya, love team na kami. Nakakatuwa ’tsaka nakakaiyak,” he says.

This year, the fans are in for another treat as their idols will star in the highly-anticipated historical series Pulang Araw alongside Asia’s Multimedia Star Alden Richards and the First Lady of Primetime Sanya Lopez.

“We have to definitely look out for [Barbie]. She has more to give, hindi lang ’yung minahal niyo na si Klay sa ‘Maria Clara [at Ibarra]. Meron pa siyang maibubuga na mas malaki, na mas exciting for ‘Pulang Araw,’” Ms. Joy Marcelo teases.

“Siguro si David, isa sa mga taong pinaka, ’pag tinitingnan ko hanggang ngayon, kinikilig pa rin ako. He has that quality in him na kahit matanda, bata, teenager, kinilig. For me, he’s one of the best leading men in town na meron pa, madami pang pwedeng ibigay.”

Like David and Barbie’s on-cam partnership, Rayver Cruz and Julie Anne San Jose’s relationship in real life also came unexpectedly. Started as best friends, their relationship slowly blossomed into the love that they both deserved, at a time they were both moving on from their highly-publicized split from their celebrity exes.

“Kasi ganito ’yan, ’yung love story namin, nag-start talaga kami na besties kami,” Rayver says shyly as he sits beside Julie Anne. “’Di ba magkatropa tayo? Tinatawag niya pa ako dati na ‘bro,’ ganyan.”

Julie Anne confirms, “Bro or brother ’yung tawag ko sa kanya before. As in talaga, ’yun, close talaga kami, ta’s parang besties [’yung relationship namin.]”

Way before Rayver fell in love with Julie Anne, it was the fans who noticed the chemistry between them. Rayver and Julie Anne first worked together in the variety show Studio 7 (2018) and then, later on, in All-Out Sundays (2020). It was in these variety shows that the public had their first glimpses of a promising love team.

“Nag-start ’yun sa mga prod numbers, e. Natuwa sila sa JulieVer, may mga following bigla after ng prod numbers namin. So, naging consistent everytime na mag-AOS, or nung Studio 7 pa lang. Talagang lagi kong nakaka-prod si Juls no’n,” Rayver looks back. “Kinakabahan pa nga ako, lagi akong nagpapaturo, hanggang ngayon naman nagpapaturo pa rin ako kasi siyempre, she’s the best. So, thankful ako kasi daming kong natutunan, lalo na sa singing dahil sa kanya, coach Julie.”

When the management of GMA Entertainment Group noticed the on-screen chemistry of Rayver and Julie Anne, they offered the hosting gig of The Clash to the couple to be the clash masters for the show's second season. For that, Julie Anne has nothing but gratitude to their fans who saw something in both of them that back then they didn’t even see themselves.

Julie Anne says, “Ako naman, natutuwa kami kasi ’yung support na binibigay ng mga fans, ng mga supporters namin, ever since na nagkaroon ng JulieVer, which before pa, ‘Studio 7’ days pa lang, tapos maganda ’yung reception doon sa mga performance namin. From then on, nagtuloy-tuloy na ’yung mga prods, nagkaroon na kami ng acting stints, nagkaroon kami ng movie, and sa ‘The Clash’ lagi kaming nakikitang magkasama.”

After the second season of The Clash that aired in 2019, Julie Anne became busy in the following years despite the pandemic as she toured the country for her digital concert series titled ‘Limitless, A Musical Trilogy.’

In the first part of the series titled ‘Breathe,’ Julie Anne toured various parts of Mindanao as she showed her vocal prowess to the people in the region. In the second part, titled ‘Heal,’ she visited the Visayas, including the province of Siquijor, with Rayver as her guest star.

Unbeknown to her, it was on that tiny island in the Central Visayas region that Rayver realized that he had caught feelings for his best friend who used to call him “bro.”

“Special place ang Siquijor kasi after pagbalik galing Siquijor, nung nag-guest ako sa ‘Limitless’ niya, doon ko napagtanto na mahal ko ang best friend ko,” he proudly says as Julie Anne visibly cannot contain her kilig.

After Limitless, which won a silver medal from the New York Film Festival, Julie Anne collaborated with Rayver Cruz for another concert, JulieVerse, at the Newport Performing Arts Theatre in Pasay City. Before their family, friends, and fans, Rayver declared his love for Julie Anne. He said, “Naalala mo nung birthday mo, ’di ba? Sinabi ko sa ’yo kung anong nararamdaman ko, ’di ba? ’Yung nandito tayo sa Newport, sa concert. Gusto ko lang din iparinig sa kanila. Julie Anne San Jose, I love you. I love you so much!”

Caught off-guard by Rayver’s message, Julie Anne quickly smiled, as she tried to compose herself. After a few moments, she finally mustered a reply.“Ray, ano ba ito? Hindi, gusto ko lang sabihin na sobrang grateful ako sa ’yo na dumating ka sa buhay ko. And ang dami nang nagbago sa buhay ko simula nang dumating ka. Kaya gusto kong sabihin… I love you, too!”

“Magkakaroon kami ng first big Sparkle tour [with Julie Anne] in the US, siya ’yung maghe-headline noon. Expect so much more from Julie, our Limitless Star. Rayver naman, we all know him as an all-out performer. Rayver is now with ‘Asawa Ng Asawa Ko, ’yung acting niya mabubuhay pa dito sa serye na ’to. Magkakaroon din siya ng iba pang gagawin, kasama rin siya sa Sparkle tour.

More than a year after Rayver and Julie Anne declared their love for one another, Rayver assured the public that he would marry Julie Anne in the future. But right now, no timeline has been set.

“Gusto ko lang sabihin na ako ’yung number one fan niya,” he says to Julie Anne. “And nandito lang ako palagi to support her and to be with her forever. She knows naman how much I love her, siya lang ’yung isang babae sa buhay ko.”

Julie Anne replies, “Grateful ako sa ‘yo, Ray, for everything. Thank you so much kasi dumating ka sa buhay ko, and palagi ko namang sinasabi sa ’yo na I’m so proud of you sa lahat ng na-achieve mo sa buhay, sa growth mo. Of course, obviously, you’re really full of wisdom, at sa ’yo ako natututo pagdating sa buhay. Sa craft mo na nakaka-proud, talagang may drive ka sa lahat ng bagay na gusto mong gawin. I’m so proud of you. I’m always here for you. You’re not only my best friend, but I love you. Alam mo naman ’yun.”

This 2024, Julie is set to fly higher as she headlines the first-ever Sparkle tour in the United States. Rayver is also making his mark as an actor, portraying the role of Jordan Manansala in Asawa Ng Asawa Ko (2024).

“Magkakaroon kami ng first big Sparkle tour [with Julie Anne] in the US, siya ’yung maghe-headline noon. Expect so much more from Julie, our Limitless Star,” Ms. Joy reveals.

“Rayver naman, we all know him as an all-out performer. Rayver is now with ‘Asawa Ng Asawa Ko, ’yung acting niya mabubuhay pa dito sa serye na ’to. Magkakaroon din siya ng iba pang gagawin, kasama rin siya sa Sparkle tour.”

Mobirise

Different from the stories of David and Barbie, and Rayver and Julie Anne, Ruru Madrid and Bianca Umali were the couple nobody expected. They didn’t star in a series together, and they even had their own love-team partners. Although it had been long rumored that Ruru and Bianca were in a relationship, it wasn’t until award-winning broadcast journalist Jessica Soho asked Ruru about the real score that he confirmed it.

“Dahil kayo po ang nagtanong Ma’am Jes, this is the first time na sasagutin ko po ito. We’re dating for four years,” Ruru candidly said in an episode of Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho in 2022. “We’re just very happy dahil ramdam po namin ’yung suporta ng bawat isa.”

Since then, Ruru became more forthcoming about the ups and downs of their relationship.

“The first year, iyon ’yung year na parang I always go out, gumigimik. And, I felt na parang doon sa one year na ’yun, ang dami kong naging kaibigan but I realized na kapag lumalabas ka, not all people na nakakasama mo sa gimik ay matuturing mo na kaagad na kaibigan,” Ruru said during his guesting in the podcast Surprise Guest with Pia Arcangel.“Nagkaroon ako ng realizations [na] ayoko nang lumabas, hanggang sa sabi ko, ‘I need someone na makakatulong sa akin.’ Then, dumating si Bianca sa buhay ko. I stopped everything. I stopped going out, kumbaga mas nag-focus ako sa career ko. Trinay ko ’yung best ko na ibalik ’yung dating ako.”

When Ruru reached the lowest point in his showbiz career, it was Bianca who stood by his side. Although Ruru knew that he was set to play the lead role in Lolong (2022), several unfortunate events took place because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The delays affected Ruru's emotional well-being badly.

“Dumating ‘yung ‘Lolong,’ lagi kaming nade-delay. Siya lang ’yung nagpapalakas ng loob ko na, ‘Tandaan mo ’tong sasabihin ko sa ’yo. Someday dadating ’yan sa ’yo, hindi man ngayon pero dadating ’yan sa ’yo dahil alam ko na ibinibigay mo ’yung puso mo sa bawat ginagawa mo. 'Pinanghawakan ko ’yung sinabi niya sa akin. She said, ‘Kailangan mo Ru na mag-grow nang mag-isa. Nandito ako pero kailangan mo ring matutong maging mag-isa'. Nung sinabi niya sa akin ’yun, ’yon ’yung time na nag-explore ako. Like I went to this place na one we ek straight na naroon ako doing some healing and doing yoga.”

Now, almost two years after Ruru confirmed his relationship with Bianca, they can say that today is the strongest they have ever been in their almost six-year relationship.

Bianca says, “Sa kasalukuyan, masasabi namin na this is the strongest that we have ever been so far. Sa phase na ’to ’yung talagang confident kami sa pagmamahal namin sa isa’t isa. What we loved about each other now is that we support each other, to the point na there’s no way but up for the both of us dahil naghahatakan kami pataaas. And core namin ’yung isa’t isa.”

Ruru adds, “Right now, alam namin na sobrang strong kaming dalawa but, siyempre, hindi natin maiiwasan na maraming mga tao na hihilahin kayo pababa, na hindi kami meant to be sa isa’t isa. Pero kaming dalawa, hindi lamang para patunayan namin ’yung relationship namin sa kanila, kung hindi para patunayan rin namin sa isa’t isa na we’re meant to be together.”

Ruru and Bianca are both well-aware that there are people, bashers if you may, that wish for their relationship to fail. Instead of getting angry at these people, they know that they are mature enough to handle their relationship especially if they put God in the center.

Currently, Ruru stars as the Primetime Action Hero Elias Guerrero in Black Rider, while Bianca continues her preparation as Sang’gre Terra in the highly anticipated Encantadia Chronicles: Sang’gre.

“Expect bigger things for Ruru, and I believe he will make it big this 2024. Si Bianca naman, she’s one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen, I have laid my eyes on. Ang ganda, ganda ni Bianca, she radiates beauty,” Ms. Joy says of the couple. “She’s very elegant pero pwede rin siyang maglaro, she’s very edgy. With Sang’gre, with her as the lead, she will be a bigger star [this 2024]. Very intelligent din ‘yan and very independent, that’s what sets her apart from the rest. We have one beautiful actress in Bianca.”

Sparklin’ to the Future

Like the great Roman Empire, Sparkle was not built in one day. Ms. Joy admits that they went through several challenging but necessary phases.

“During the past years when we were called GMA Artist Center, siguro naka-kahon pa tayo na medyo kikilos lang tayo sa loob. We weren’t really very active, especially for events. Hindi ko naman masasabi na conservative but we were confined more to GMA, ’cause it’s where we belong,” the female executive admits. “But slowly, kailangan natin mag-reach out kasi naramdaman din naman natin ’yung need ng netizens, and even ’yung ating viewers, na kailangan we step out of our shells, para lumawak ’yung reach natin.”

Since becoming Sparkle, the company has successfully mounted the GMA Gala, where celebrities and personalities, regardless of the network, would come together for a night of celebration. Sparkle has also been successful in introducing another yearly occasion - the Sparkle Spell - where the company’s talents have a chance to walk the black carpet dressed as their favorite character.

Mobirise

Barbie, who has been with Sparkle all her life, is humbled that her management for over a decade continues to explore new things that can greatly benefit her as an actress. She says, “Sobrang na-a-appreciate ko na nag-e-explore pa rin talaga ’yung management to improve. I’ve been with GMA and Artist Center for so long, and it’s so humbling and ina-admire ko ’yun na isa sa pinaka-best management still explores how to improve.”

As a businessman himself, David has seen first-hand how Sparkle improved the way it markets and brands its roster of talents. He says, “Ako, I love marketing and branding. Seeing them nag-rebrand, talagang nag-work siya hand-in-hand with how the company wanted to perceive the management, the Artist Center. Sparkle, happy, ganun.”

For Julie Anne, who describes herself as “Batang GMA,” she is filled with gratitude for the only talent management company that invested greatly in her. “Grateful ako kasi laging may opportunities na laging dumadating. Lagi akong naatasan na ito ’yung gagawin mong work, ito ’yung gagawin mong trabaho, ito ’yung mga opportunities, ito ’yung mga plano sa ’yo. I really believe na talagang nandyan sila to guide me, and to help me hone my craft more,” she proudly declares.

Rayver, who started his career with GMA before transferring to ABS-CBN, is impressed with how Sparkle has managed to still discover new things for him to try. “Akala ko noon, nagawa ko na lahat ng gusto ko, or kahit papaano, nandoon na ako sa max ng kakayahan na pwede kong gawin. Pagbalik ko sa Kapuso network and sa Sparkle, na-unlock nila ’yung mga skills na hindi ko iniisip na meron pala ako,” he says.

With Sparkle, Ruru feels like he found another management that not only pushes himself to do better every day, but also collaborates with him in achieving his goals. “Parang Direk Maryo [J. Delos Reyes] rin na dapat lagi mong pinapatunayan ’yung sarili mo. ’Pag napi-feel nilang nawawalan ako ng drive or nawawalan ako ng passion sa ginagawa ko, sila ’yung nagpapaalala sa akin,” he says.

Bianca is the living testament to Sparkle’s commitment to improving the careers, and ultimately, the lives of its stars. “Mula ng pagkabata ako up until my age today na talagang, looking back, there were a lot of phases din, e. Kasabay ng pag-grow ko ’yung growth din ng management team. It’s such a blessing and an honor to be one of those na na-witness ’yun,” she says.

Sparkle may have already achieved its goal in lighting a spark in the entertainment industry, but the company promised that they would not stop there. Not now, not ever.

“Mas kilala na tayo ngayon as one of the biggest talent management agencies kaya we were very happy with the results. Dumami ’yung partners natin, we grew. Tuloy-tuloy pa rin ’yan since we have so many plans in store for all of you,” Ms Joy proudly states.
