Lea Salonga proudly supports trans child, Nic Chien

Award-winning singer and stage actress Lea Salonga has shared her experience in supporting her 18-year-old child Nic Chien, who was assigned female at birth, but opened up about being transmasculine at 14.
Lea, currently starring in the Broadway Sondheim revue Old Friends, shared about her open-minded perspective on Nic's transition.
“The one thing I've learned is that you have to raise your child the way your child needs to be raised,” she shared. "As a parent, I want to set my child up for success. I want my child to feel safe and strong and ready to conquer the world on their own terms.”
"You have to meet your kid where they are," she added.
The two graced the cover of US magazine People, where Lea showed her support in parenting with Nic, and becoming "a fierce ally to her trans child."
Nic talked about his journey and the emotional effect it had on him, ""I am still figuring it out. It took a while. A lot of crying," he said.
He shared that he had numerous conversations with his parents but emphasized that they are "very accepting," so he never felt afraid to open up to them.
"She (Lea) just didn't want my life to be as hard as it would be," he added.
Lea and Nic will take the stage in the Manila production of the Broadway musical Into the Woods.
Nic will finally achieve his lifelong dream of "playing boy characters" as he steps into the role of Jack. Meanwhile, Lea will reprise her role as The Witch, which she first portrayed in the 1994 Singapore production at age 23.
Into the Woods debuts at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Circuit Makati on August 7. Due to overwhelming demand, extra show dates have been scheduled.
