Mercy Sunot, the vocalist of Aegis, had her life and legacy, along with her final moments, featured in a tribute episode of Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho.
Nemia Atendido, one of Mercy's friends residing in the U.S., recalled her moments with the singer as she battled breast and lung cancer.
According to Nemia, Mercy wanted to receive treatment in the U.S. and had been residing there for the past few months.
She celebrated her 48th birthday on November 6 this year. Days later, on November 9, she fulfilled her Filipino fans' request to perform classic Aegis hits at a gathering.
"Kaya mahal na mahal siya ng tao. Hindi siya tatanggi, masigla siya. Parang wala siyang iniindang sakit," Aegis producer Donnie Pestrana said.
"Talagang parang pamilya namin siya, inalagaan namin siya," he added.
On November 12, Mercy underwent lung surgery which was considered successful. However, two days into her post-operation recovery, Mercy's oxygen levels dropped, prompting her doctor to inform her loved ones of her declining condition.
Nemia shared, "Tumawag 'yung doctor niya sa akin at sinabi na bumababa 'yung oxygen level niya. Nininerbyos na siya so pina-cheer up ko siya, lumaban ka.
Mercy also uploaded a TikTok video just a day before she passed away, informing her fans of her condition while in the ICU (intensive care unit) and asking for prayers.
Nemia advised Mercy to follow her doctors' orders and Mercy obliged, undergoing intubation to aid her lungs. "Mercy ang unahin natin ay ang oxygen level mo muna...pumayag naman siya."
Unfortunately, on November 18, she passed away despite being revived in the hospital.
Donnie has nothing but fond memories and gratitude for the late singer, "Mercy, maraming maraming salamat sa iyong pagmamahal. Sa iyong magandang tinig at sa iyong magandang musika na iniwan mo. Hindi ka makakalimutan ng buong mundo."
Nemia and Mercy's family and loved ones are working to bring the remains of the Aegis vocalist back to the Philippines in December.
A benefit concert for Mercy will be organized by Aegis to support her family and two children. The two-night concert is scheduled for February 1 and 2, 2025, at the New Frontier Theater in Quezon City. Tickets now available at ticketnet.com.ph
