Ruru Madrid goes 'back to zero' in martial arts training

Primetime action hero Ruru Madrid has become very passionate about learning Laraw Kali Pamuok, a Filipino martial arts system.
According to the actor, he had to unlearn certain techniques which he picked up in other martial arts to correctly practice Laraw Kali Pamuok.
"I've trained boxing and Muay Thai before… pero this time, iba. Under the Laraw Kali Pamuok system, I had to switch to southpaw -- kasi sa FMA, the dominant hand should always be closer to the target," he wrote on Instagram.
"Southpaw" refers to a stance in boxing and other sports where the right hand and the right foot are forward. It is usually the stance for left-handed boxers.
Ruru is right-handed so it is a big adjustment for him.
"The challenge is staying humble na bumalik sa umpisa, and not letting frustration get in the way," Ruru says.
Learning and practicing martials arts teaches him discipline and patience.
"Tinuturuan akong mahalin yung proseso -- to stay patient, consistent, and respect the art. It's not just about power -- it's about flow, precision, and purpose. Back to zero. Back to discipline. ," he ends his post.
