Alfred Vargas Yasmine and son Cristiano

Alfred Vargas and his wife Yasmine couldn't be prouder of their son Cristiano, who made a triumphant return to the pool and took home a major award.

Actor-public servant Alfred Vargas and his wife, Yasmine Espiritu-Vargas, are bursting with pride after their son, Cristiano, made a triumphant return to competitive swimming and brought home a major accolade.

In a heartwarming Instagram post, Yasmine shared the inspiring journey of their "comeback kid," who recently competed at the Milo Swim Competition after facing a long absence from the sport.

According to Yasmine, Cristiano had to overcome "months of serious challenges, setbacks, and deprived opportunities" before finally being able to dive back into the pool.

Despite the long hiatus and the added challenge of racing against older athletes in the 9 to 10-year-old division, the young swimmer delivered his best performances yet—improving his records and posting personal best times across all his events.

"Cristiano persevered and never gave up despite all the noise, obstacles, and distractions. He stayed focused, trusted the process, and rose to the occasion," Yasmine wrote.

Because of his stellar performance, Cristiano was named the Most Outstanding Swimmer (MOS) for Category A. This marks the second consecutive year he has received the prestigious title in the same competition.

Yasmine took the opportunity to express her deep gratitude to the people who supported Cristiano's journey, particularly legendary coach Manny Thruelen, who came out of retirement to train him.

"Our deepest gratitude to Coach Manny Thruelen for taking Cristiano under your wing even though you are already retired from coaching," she expressed. "Thank you for welcoming him, believing in him when he needed it most, and generously sharing your time, knowledge, and heart."

She also extended her thanks to the swimming community, their former Brittany Swimming Team, and Cristiano's former mentors, Coach Gary and Coach JM, for cheering him on.

Reflecting on the valuable life lessons from their son's recent victory, Yasmine added: "Hard work always rewards those who persevere and trust the long and arduous process. The stopwatch never lies. Genuine character transcends distortion & distractions. And God really protects and blesses the good and faithful hearted."

Ending her post with a sweet message for their champion, she wrote, "We are so proud of you, anak!"

Alfred Vargas and Yasmine Espiritu, who have been married since 2010, are blessed with four children: Alexandra, Aryana, Cristiano, and their youngest, Sofia Aurora, whom they welcomed in late 2023.

Congratulations, Cristiano!
