Actress Ayen Munji-Laurel and her husband Franco Laurel have been married for 22 years and with five kids of different generations, the actress admits that it was not easy to become a mom and a friend at the same time, saying that there should still be boundaries between them.
In her interview on the Updated with Nelson Canlas podcast, Ayen revealed the lesson she's learned from raising different generations of kids, and that is ”Meron pa rin dapat tayong boundary bilang mga magulang.”
She then recalled her own experiences with her mom, “Ako kasi nung panahon ko with my mom, tama na hindi ko nasi-share lahat, okay? Noong bata ako, noong wala akong asawa.”
“Pero nung nagkaasawa ako, mas na-express ko sa mommy ko lahat ng mga nangyayari sa buhay ko. Mas naging parang mas magkaibigan kami ng mommy ko nung nagkaroon ako ng husband, ng sarili kong pamilya,” she added.
The former Start-Up Ph actress also shared how she finally understood the sentiments of and appreciated her mom now that she has her own family.
Ayen then recalled how she was also a theater actress before and how her mom understood her late schedule which is something she can relate to now as her 21-year-old daughter is also in the production design side of the theater.
“'Yung nakikita ko 'yung sarili ko sa kanya, kasi gabi na rin umuuwi dahil may production na ginagawa. But the difference now is naiintindihan ko siya kasi that's how my mother also was. Iniintindi niya na lang ako kasi alam niya may rehearsals 'to,” she added.
She also said that while she's still a mom to her kids, she understands that there are things that they would not want to tell her and that hers and Franco's job right now is to be parents and try to keep their kids safe.
Ayen then recalled what she said to her daughter recently, “Kakasabi ko lang sa kanya kagabi, 'Just remember, no matter what you do whatever it is, always remember that nandito ako, I love you no matter what. It's not going to change.”
“I had to assure her, I had to assure her all the time. Kasi I don't get to talk to her all the time, lalo na busy siya,” she added.
