Vlogger and entrepreneur Carlo Ople's jaw dropped when a content creator revealed that a Pokémon card just sold with an amount even higher than an SUV.
Carlo interviewed Jay Loves Cardboard, an avid card collector, taking a deep dive into the ins and outs of buying and trading Pokémon cards. In case you didn't know, Pokémon cards are collectible playing cards based on the popular Pokémon video game and anime franchise.
Recalling their previous conversation, Carlo said in his vlog, “The last time we had Jay in the show, I asked him, the same question, I don't know if you remember the answer. You said, 'the market is correcting,' kasi pabagsak ang Pokemon value everyone was rushing to One Piece, you remember? That was the context of our last episode, pabagsak ang presyo ng Pokemon, 'tapos 'yung One Piece 'yung pataas. Ngayon! Pataas na uli si Pokemon."
Jay replied, “Pataas na uli si Pokemon at tumataas uli 'yung One Piece. Medyo lately lang siya, a few days ago I dunno papasok tayo dito sa usapin na 'to. I did see some post about my vendor friends, who were really ramping up buying One Piece and selling One Piece cards.”
The seasoned YouTuber then interjected, “Grabe! Tapos local lang nabebenta lahat 'yan?” Jay said yes. Carlo added, “So, grabe 'yung liquidity nung market. Mas liquid pa yata Pokemon kesa sa stock market ng Pilipinas, e.”
The card collector then shared a story about a card with a price tag of Php 5 million. “Eto, katuwaan lang hindi ko madi-disclose kung sino na lang siya. Pero, he just posted yesterday night that he bought five million peso card. And he just sold it today” Carlo Ople was visibly shocked with the details his guest shared on the vlog.
He then inquired, “How much?”
“Hindi na niya dinisclose, chances are, probably five percent of that,” Jay said.

Aside from the discussion on how collectors earn money, Carlo and Jay shared their experience with kids and teenagers who are also into Pokémon cards.
Jay admitted that he is surprised to meet young Pinoys who have the money to shell out for the really expensive ones.
“Like 14-years-old, who handles Php50,000. May mga 50,000 cash sila.
“That's one part that I'm liking o they get to negotiate. It's fun e.”
But then Jay realized, “Pero we are talking about hundreds of thousands of pesos like, 'tapos 'you are talking to a 14-year-old kid trying to low ball you out. Negosyo pa ba to?”
Carlo also chimed in, “Tapos, gagamitin ka pa nung mga puppy dog eyes ng bata. 'Please, Kuya.'
“Pero, 'yung hinihingin discount sa'yo singkuwenta mil [laughs].”
Looking at it from a business perspective, Jay stated that he is glad to see kids and teenagers already honing their entrepreneurial skills.
“It's an interesting one, as someone who teaches entrepreneurship, I'm happy that they are getting into this early. They are experiencing how to negotiate, talk to people- good and bad. And having them learn early on mostly naman safe space, I'm quite glad that they get to experience this.”
