What do you think of the proposal to ban these hugely-popular K-drama series in the country?

Several showbiz personalities have also weighed in on the proposed ban on Korean dramas suggested by Senator Jinggoy Estrada.

During the 2023 budget hearing of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) last Tuesday (October 18), Senator Estrada expressed his views that these Korean shows negatively impact the local entertainment industry.

GMA-7's creative consultant Suzette Doctolero, the creator of the hugely popular telefantasya series Encantadia, tweeted that there's no need for a ban.

Iisa ang kumpas: promote Korea thru culture: kpop, series, fashion, food etc all over the world. So multi-billion industry na nila.”

Doctolero also shared with her Twitter followers an approximate amount of the cost of producing a local teleserye compared to a K-drama series.

She stated, “A Kseries cost 200k+ usd (12M php) per ep.

Multi-awarded Sparkle comedian Pokwang also echoed what Doctolero said and stressed the importance of government support to the entertainment industry, instead of implementing a ban.

Meanwhile, coming up with ”better content” is the best way according to Parokya ni Edgar vocalist Chito Miranda to better compete with these foreign shows.

He explained in his Tweet, “Targeting foreign shows or acts is not the solution for the lack of support towards local shows and artists.... Coming up with better shows and songs, is.”

The OPM icon then continued, “As artists, kelangan lang natin galingan mas lalo para sabay tayo sa foreign acts. Earn" the support. 'Di pwedeng sapilitan.”
