Rhian Ramos admits she learned a lot from portraying the character of Marge in the advocacy film Miss Probinsyana.
“It changed my concept of what a 'probinsyana' is,” the actress said during the press conference before its special screening on Saturday, July 27, at the Robinsons Galleria Movie World in Ortigas, Mandaluyong City.
Rhian added that the movie breaks the stereotype about women living in provinces.
She said, “Personally, I've always lived in Manila, I grew up here, so I really didn't know or have a lot of friends who lived anywhere else. I can't help it kasi sometimes when we just want to understand something plain and simple, yung go-to natin is to put it in a box and define it in the most simple way para lang, for us, we get it.
“But that does such a disservice to the people. It's like when you say, 'Run like a girl,' 'Why, how does a girl run?' Nai-stereotype natin.”
Directed by JP Ninalga, Miss Probinsyana is inspired by the true story of Marjorie Aviso, who is also the producer of the film. It follows the story of Marge who embarks on a transformative career path to create change in her province.
Rhian stated about her role, “Itong natutunan ko kay Marge, na sana matutunan din ng ibang tao, it's that no matter where you come from, your educational background, your gender, you can achieve anything that you want, you can get the future that you've been dreaming of. It's all coming from inside.
“The thought na yung worth mo is connected to your gender, educational attainment, or kung saan ka lumaki, you're the only one standing in your way. I hope that's what anyone who feels like nalilimitahan sila sa buhay nila, I hope that's what it can bring to their hearts.”
Meanwhile, although she enjoyed playing the role of Marge, Rhian admitted that she would still choose to live in the city.
She confessed, “Personally, especially at my age now, I would still pick the city because I've always been here at nasanay na ako and my attention span is… So, I like the hectic feel and I feel like my base emotion is just a bit suppressed and I like it naman pa rin.”
Miss Probinsyana will be shown in cinemas nationwide starting August 7.
Aside from this movie, Rhian also had a short stint on Pulang Araw, the new historical series on GMA Prime.
