Many fans quickly defended Derek, praising him and discouraging people from leaving hate comments.

Regardless of other people's opinions, Derek seems to be very fulfilled in his personal life, after recently getting a "yes" from girlfriend-turned-fiancée Ellen and establishing a closer relationship with his son, Austin.

The Kapuso actor got emotional when his 17-year-old son Austin shared a heart-to-heart conversation with him and called him, "Dad."

Derek is co-parenting his son Austin with ex-wife Mary Christine Jolly. Meanwhile, Ellen is also co-parenting her son Elias Modesto with former partner John Lloyd Cruz.

Both Derek and Ellen have responded to a few comments in the past regarding their relationship on Instagram, particularly about their set-up as single parents.
