Pinukaw ang damdamin ng buong bansa sa balita ng pagkamatay ng dalawang varsity members ng Ateneo de Manila University Men's Basketball Team na sina Rene Clert Baterbonia (19) at Divine Adili (21).

Ayon sa opisyal na pahayag ng unibersidad, nagdaraos ng team building ang Ateneo men's basketball squad sa Dipaculao, Aurora at sa kasamaang-palad pumanaw sina Rene at Divine matapos malunod noong Lunes, June 8.

Maraming espekulasyon at haka-haka ang naglabasan online tungkol sa pangyayari lalo na at naging matipid sa detalye ang paaralan sa mga nangyari sa dalawang student-athletes.

Tila may nagbalik na masamang alaalaa sa premyadong direktor at Film Development Council of the Philippines chairman na si Joey Reyes dahil sa sinapit ng dalawang basketbolista.

Ayon sa mga ulat, sa lugar din ng Dipaculao pumanaw ang dating drayber ni Direk Joey.

Taong 2022 nang mangyari ang malagim na insidente kung saan nagshu-shooting si Direk Joey ng sexy film niya na Secrets kung saan tampok ang VMX actor na si Benz Sangalang, Felix Roco, Janelle Tee, at Denise Esteban.

Inalala ng seasoned director ang nangyari sa kaniyang driver nang magkomento siya sa Facebook post ni Cathy Babao-Sanchez, anak ng veteran actress na si Caridad Sanchez.

Pagbabalik-tanaw ni Direk Joey, “I know the place where the two players died: this was exactly the same place where my driver drowned in 2022 on our final day of shooting a project.”

“The place has a notoriety for taking lives each year because of its vicious undertow and gigantic waves from the open seas. Even the locals don't swim out of fear of the unpredictability of the water's behavior.”

Dagdag pa niya na talagang "delikado" ang naturang lugar at sa tingin niya mas minabuti na nagkaroon ng "assessment" kung dapat bang itinuloy ang team building sa Dipaculao.

“That is why when one of my friends messaged me asking where in Aurora my driver died as we ended shooting, I was shocked to learn that this was where these promising young athletes perished under similar conditions.

“That area is NOTORIOUS for being dangerous and treacherous. There should have been greater examination and assessment as to the choice of venue for a training activity.

“Now all we can do is to pray for strength on the part of these devastated parents who only wished a better and brighter future for their sons," saad niya.
