A major change is up ahead for social media giant Facebook as The Verge reports that the company is planning on rebranding the platform by changing its name next week.

According to the report, “a source with direct knowledge of the matter” divulged that this move comes as Facebook aims to emphasize its focus on building a metaverse.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is expected to shed light on the said name change in the company's upcoming annual Connect conference on October 28, although it is believed that this might happen sooner.

Allegedly, Facebook is looking to be known as more than just a social media platform, and that the planned rebranding would position Facebook as only one of the many products under a parent company that also oversees Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, and others.

It is also believed that the purpose of the rebranding is to separate Zuckerberg's futuristic vision and work from the flak that Facebook is currently receiving.

It can be recalled that a controversy recently exploded after former employee-turned-whistleblower Frances Haugen leaked internal documents to The Wall Street Journal.

In July, Zuckerberg told The Verge that over the coming years, “we will effectively transition from people seeing us as primarily being a social media company to being a metaverse company.”

True enough, the social media giant is already gearing up for the said rebranding.

Last month, Facebook announced the release of the smart glasses it created in partnership with Ray-Ban called Ray-Ban Stories, which lets users take photos and videos with a single click of a button or even hands-free.

Recently, they also announced the promotion of AR and VR Head Andrew Bosworth to chief technology officer, and revealed their plan to hire 10,000 more employees to work in Europe for the planned metaverse.

The Verge's Alex Heath speculates that Facebook's new name would probably have something to do with Horizon, the name of the yet-to-be-released VR version of a hybrid Facebook and online gaming platform Roblox.
