National Museum of Fine Arts

Artworks created by Ang Kiukok, Bencab, and Vicente Manansala are just some of the masterpieces included in the collection on display at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Manila.

It's been a long time coming, but as the saying goes, better late than never.

A total of 115 Filipino-made paintings have come home and are now staying and available for viewing at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Manila.

The artworks, prior to its return here in the Philippines, were displayed for 47 years at the Philippine Center in New York (PCNY) in the U.S.

The PCNY art collection gathered in 1974 and currently in Manila include artworks by some of the country's esteemed painters including Ang Kiukok, Benedicto “Bencab” Cabrera, Vicente Manansala, and Cesar Legaspi, among others.

Prints created by notable artists such as Manuel Rodriguez Sr. (dubbed as the 'Father of Philippine Printmaking'), Romulo Olazo, Rodolfo Samonte, Rod Paras-Perez, Mauro Malang Santos, Solomon Saprid, Juvenal Sansó, Manuel Baldemor, Augusto Albor, Cid Reyes, Raul Isidro, Norma Belleza and Lilian Hwang, are also on display.

“After forty-seven years, these 115 works of art are now home for the first time and are on temporary exhibition at the National Museum of Fine Arts so that the Filipino public at large might have the opportunity to appreciate them and recognize the artistic excellence that strongly promoted - and continues to promote - Filipino heritage, expression and talent to the world,” the National Museum of the Philippines wrote on Facebook.

“We hope that visitors will soon have the chance to view the exhibition physically before the works again leave our shores and return to New York City on the other side of the world.”

The exhibit titled Homecoming Exhibition of the Philippine Center New York Core Collection of 1974 was first launched virtually through Pamana.ph last month.

Fortunately, the National Museum of Fine Arts has reopened on March 2, allowing guests once again after closing for almost a year due to the pandemic.

Homecoming Exhibition of the Philippine Center New York Core Collection of 1974 will run until February 13, 2022.

For more information about the exhibit including museum health protocols, contact (02) 8527 1218 or email inquiry@nationalmuseumph.gov.ph.
