The 7 foods you should avoid on a first date

By Cara Emmeline Garcia

In the dating scene, making a great impression counts.

While what you wear is important, what you eat also makes a huge difference in ace-ing what should be a wonderful first date.

For this bit, we turn to Anna Bey, a Swedish etiquette expert who revealed on her YouTube channel the seven foods you should never eat on a first date.

Now, we're not saying ordering these dishes will ruin your chances at a second date, but they could.

1. Onion

Anna said women should never eat dishes containing raw onions around a new suitor.

“It's pretty self-explanatory. You have to avoid things like ceviche, guacamole, and salads,” she said

“What happens is that raw onions have a very strong and particular smell --a smell that doesn't go away instantly, even if you brush your teeth.”

2. Garlic

Secondly, Anna warned against eating garlic.

“This is an extremely smelly food that you must avoid because this is a smell that is going to stick to you.”

Although in some cultures everything is cooked in garlic, Anna recommends straying away from it as much as possible.

“When you are in the company of a man, you do not want to have anybody odors, and that's the issue with garlic and onion.

“I'm sorry to say it but if you want to leave a good impression, you better think about what you eat.”

3. Salad

The third food she warned against ordering is salads, being the go-to meal of women who want to impress their date early on.

She said it should be avoided due to its difficulty to eat daintily.

“Depending on how big the salad leaves are, it might be very hard to take a bite-sized piece without everything just unfolding in the air and splashing dressing on you and so on.

“And the number-one rule with eating salad is that you are not allowed to cut a salad with your knife - salad is supposed to be eaten the way it is,” she said.

4. Foie Gras

Probably the most expensive and the most unethical. This luxury meal, made of the liver of a duck, is produced in an inhumane manner.

Anna said, “Many times people go to sophisticated restaurants and they order foie gras because it's kind of an affluent dish.

“But in reality, you're supporting animal cruelty. Foie gras is extremely cruel to animals, so don't order foie gras --you will not be sophisticated, you will just look uneducated,” she warned.

5. Spaghetti

“Do you know how to eat spaghetti elegantly?” she asked.

The etiquette expert said women should just skip the Italian dish for fear the sauce splashes easily on clothes.

“Unless you are a pro at eating spaghetti, there's a big chance you're going to make a big mess and the worst is when you are wearing a light-colored outfit.”

So, save this dish when dining out with friends or when you're having a casual dinner at home.

6. “Fast food”

Fast food for Anna is everything that has to be eaten using hands -- burgers, nachos, fries, club sandwiches, etc.

“First of all, these types of foods are not very elegant to eat. Can you imagine yourself, a sophisticated woman, eating a burger?” she asked.

Like the latter, she explains that this type of food should be eaten in a more private setting, either with close friends or family.

7. Heavy carbs, extra vegetables, and anything that makes you allergic

Finally, she cautioned women to think about the effects certain food has on the body.

“You need to be aware when you go on dates that you don't eat things that are hard to digest.

“You may be wearing a beautiful tight dress, and eating things that are hard to digest can make you bloated.”

So, she said to avoid things like carbs and some types of vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, lentils, beans, bread, and pasta.

“It's not worth anything if it makes you feel like you gained 5 kilos.”

So, what is there left to eat? Well, try simple food choices like chicken breasts, sushi, coffee, cakes, ice cream, and so many other things that aren't smelly or likely to get stuck in your teeth.

Going on a first date is a tricky situation, but we hope this list can at least help you ace your dating life and the better chances of landing a second date the day after.
