Renowned director James Burrows has died. He was 85 years old.
Legendary television director James Burrows, known for his contributions to some of the most beloved comedy series of all time, has passed away. He was 85 years old.
His family confirmed the news in a statement shared with PEOPLE on June 19.
“We celebrate the extraordinary life and enduring legacy of James 'Jimmy' Burrows, who passed away peacefully today surrounded by his loving family," the statement read.
Friends cast members including Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, Courteney Cox have expressed their grief on social media, and recalled their fond memories of James.
Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in television comedy, James built a career that spanned more than five decades and left a lasting mark on the entertainment industry.
Throughout his career, James helped shape some of television's biggest sitcoms, including Friends, Frasier, Will & Grace, Taxi, and The Big Bang Theory, among many others.
He directed more than 1,000 sitcom episodes during his career, earned 11 Emmy Awards, and was widely credited with helping launch the careers of numerous television stars. In Hollywood, he was affectionately known by many as "Jimmy."
