
Many questions remain unanswered surrounding the untimely deaths of Ateneo players Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili.
The Ateneo de Manila University confirmed the heartbreaking news that Rene, 19; and Adili, 21, died due to drowning in Dipaculao, Aurora.
In their official statement, they asked everyone to respect the privacy of the families of Rene and Divine, who are still in mourning.
“We respectfully ask for privacy and space for all those grieving as they come to terms with this profound loss. As a community, we mourn with the families and loved ones of Rene and Divine and entrust them to God's loving mercy. We ask for continued prayers for all who are affected by this tragedy.”
The heartbreaking news resonated beyond the sports community, with several celebrities expressing their sorrow and offering prayers and condolences to the families of Baterbonia and Adili.
OPM icon Gary Valenciano posted on his Facebook page that he is a graduate from the rival school of Ateneo, but hearing about the tragic news of these two student-athletes was heartbreaking.
“I may be a green archer from La Salle but my heart is crushed at the devastating news about the two players from ADMU that perished in a drowning incident yesterday ” Gary noted. He continued, “My prayers are sincerely with their families️ and the entire ADMU community
“Psalm 34:18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."
Meanwhile, Sparkle stars and former student athletes, Shan Vesagas and Kimson Tan, also paid tributes to Rene and Divine through Instagram Story.
Before becoming a viral sensation, Shan was part of the varsity team of De La Salle University - Dasmariñas. The Sparkle actor was a point guard and shooting guard. On the other hand, Kimson was part of Team B of the University of Santo Tomas.

Likewise, former De La Salle College of Saint Benilde volleyball player, John Vic de Guzman, called for justice and accountability for the deaths of two Ateneo recruits.
Former Pinoy Big Brother housemate and Ateneo de Davao alumnus Lance Justin Carr also paid tribute to his fellow, Rene, through an Instagram post.
He said, "Blessed to have shared the court with you. The Ateneo de Davao community is incredibly proud of the legacy and glory you brought to our school and to the entire Davao Region. Your impact goes far beyond basketball, and your inspiration will live on in the hearts of many. Fly high, Mr. MVP."
