Dwight Ramos has joined the caravan of Filipino basketball players who are taking their talents to Japan.
The reliable Gilas Pilipinas guard has reportedly signed with the Toyama Grouses to play in the Japan B. League.
Dwight was recruited by the Ateneo Blue Eagles from the US to bolster its line-up in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).
The collegiate league, however, had to cancel its 2020 and 2021 seasons because of COVID-19, leaving many players to mull about their next career move.
“I wish I had the chance to wear Ateneo blue and white in the UAAP. However, due to the circumstances surrounding the pandemic presently and in the foreseeable future, I have decided to take my next step in my growth as a person and as an athlete,” Dwight wrote on Instagram about his decision to play overseas.
“I believe that the experience and competition level in the B League will only allow me to become a better contributor to the Gilas Program, which will continue to have my full commitment.”
This makes Dwight the latest Filipino player to join the Japanese league alongside Thirdy Ravena, Kiefer Ravena, Juan Gomez de Liaño, Javi Gomez de Liaño, Kenmark Cariño, Bobby Ray Parks, and Kobe Paras.
As a member of Gilas Pilipinas, Dwight has captured the adulation of basketball fans with his skills and valuable contribution to the team.
He played a key role in the team's FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers stint this year, averaging 13.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 2 steals.
The 6-foot-5 cager recently celebrated his 23rd birthday, with girlfriend and volleyball star Kianna Dy posting a photo of them together with the caption "HBD ILYSM.”
