Summer is in full swing and Pinoy snacks, perfect for the hot weather, are in season again. Local delicacies like halo-halo, ice scramble, mais con yelo, just to name a few, are back in demand.
Another summer favorite is green mango paired with bagoong or shrimp paste. Since mangoes are in season this time of the year, bagoong is in demand as well. And because bagoong has been a Filipino household favorite in the country for years, it's no wonder why the bagoong business is booming.
Case in point, Gavie's Bagoong, a bagoong business that started in Las Piñas.
This bagoong business started in 2019 when Gavie de Vera thought of giving away jars of bagoong to her wedding guests.
"Noong kinasal kami, naging giveaway namin noon sa wedding 'yung Gavie's bagoong. Kasi para makatipid kami sa giveaways," she said in a Pera Paraan episode.
After her wedding, her guests started calling her, inquiring about the bagoong recipe. That's when Gavie realized she can start a business and sell her bagoong.
Now, Gavie has her own warehouse and distributors all over the Philippines.
Gavie was only 19 years old when she lost her mom. This tragic loss lead her to make ends meet. "2008 'yun 'yung stage na pinakamahirap para sa'ming magkakapatid. Nung nawala si Mama, hindi namin alam kung ano 'yung gagawin.
"'Yung unang budget ko noon sa paggawa ng bagoong is P30. Nung niluto ko siya tumatagal siya ng two weeks kasi ulam naming magkakapatid. Nag-promise ako sa sarili ko na gagawin ko ang lahat para makaalis kami sa ganoong sitwasyon.
Currently, she has over 700 distributors for her bagoong business. One way she was able to expand her small business was through mastering online selling and coming up with various flavors.
From a starting budget of P1,000, her distributors now earn up to six-figure profits per week. Learn more tips from Gavie on Pera Paraan:
