Thinking of starting a vlogging career like Rufa Mae Quinto and TeamCanlasTV? Learn how to monetize your content on YouTube and whether you're required to pay taxes or not.

Former Bubble Gang star-turned-vlogger Rufa Mae Quinto and food vloggers Paul Chezter Canlas and Richard Bulawan of TeamCanlasTV are just some of the many Filipino content creators who earn from vlogging on YouTube.

In a recent episode of iJuander, Rufa Mae and the TeamCanlasTV duo talked about their vlogging journey.

For actress-comedienne Rufa Mae, vlogging was a fallback and a way to keep herself productive amid the pandemic. She is currently in the U.S. with her family after being stranded due to the lockdown.

While there, she decided to be active in vlogging in her YouTube channel that she started in 2018. Her channel now has over 400,000 subscribers.

Rufa Mae told iJuander host Susan Enriquez that she does almost everything for her vlog, except the video editing.

“Ako nagsu-shoot, script, directing and all pero may editor ako sa Philippines. Gino-Google Drive ko lang. Marami sa'tin magagaling talaga pa, e.”

Aside from her personal vlog, which served as an income-generator for her during the pandemic, she also created another YouTube channel with actress and TV host LJ Moreno-Alapag called 'The Wander Mamas.'

There, Rufa Mae and LJ share their adventures together and also feature other Filipino celebrities living in the U.S. like Donita Rose, who's now a chef, and former Eat Bulaga Dabarkads Ruby Rodriguez.

As for the TeamCanlasTV duo, the pandemic was also what prompted Chezter to make a career out of vlogging.

He works as an IT Specialist and he lost projects during the pandemic. At the same time, his wife also lost her job.

This became the turning point for Chezter. He decided to take vlogging seriously and tagged his friend Richard to create food vlogs.

The duo currently has over 460,000 subscribers on YouTube and are earning a six-figure income monthly.

#SanaAll, right? But how do vloggers earn on YouTube? And are all of them required to pay taxes? iJuander also answered these hot questions in the said episode.

First off, in order for a vlogger to monetize his or her YouTube channel, he or she must have 1,000 subscribers and reach 4,000 watch time hours in the last 12 months.

Only after meeting these two requirements can a content creator monetize his or her YouTube channel.

Monetizing is done by enrolling your YouTube channel on AdSense, so it can generate income through ads.

Now, are all vloggers on YouTube vloggers required to pay taxes? The answer is NO.

According to Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Deputy Commissioner Marissa Cabreros, only those who earn beyond the threshold are required to pay taxes from their YouTube earnings.

“'Yung buong taon kung isusuma ho 'yan at ang net income mo sa isang taon ay hindi naman lalampas ng PhP 250,000--kasi may mga nagsasabing, 'Bago pa lang kami. Kasisimula lang namin.'--wala naman babayaran kasi ang threshold po ng income tax is PhP 250,000 in year.”
