Discover one of the most unique and fun songs out there as Jazz trio Baihana dropped their original song "Isaw" in a live performance.
Spotlight Music Sessions featured the trio of Melinda Torre, Coleen de Guzman, and Marianna Graham as they performed their original song 'Isaw' on February 24.
In an exclusive interview with GMANetwork.com, Mel, Coleen, also known as Herschel, and Anna shared how their group started and why they chose to perform Jazz.
According to Mel, it was Anna who started the group almost 15 years ago when she and one of their original members, Krina Cayabyab, decided to start their own music group.
“We were inspired by this group called The Puppini Sisters, they're a UK-based group na yung type of music nila is talagang the 1930s barbershop music, but doing the newer songs in that kind of style,” Anna said.
She added, “Na-inspire kami when we heard their music. Sabi namin, 'Sige, buo tayo ng group.' She knew Mel from choir, tapos dun na nag start.”
Mel, meanwhile, said that she first knew Krina from the choir and that jazz has always been part of her life. When Mel saw a post about an audition for a jazz trio on Multiply, a social media platform for sharing photos and videos, she decided to submit her application.
She recalled, “Sabi ko, 'Sobrang perfect na I found Baihana.'”
While Krina is currently in Scotland, studying for her doctorate, They were able to have Herschel complete their trio.
What inspired their genre of music? Aside from Mel having jazz a part of her life already, Anna said part of the inspiration is doing vocal harmonies while bringing OPM into it.
“Sobrang naging inspiration namin yung APO Hiking Society, yung mga music ni Mr. C (Ryan Cayabyab) so yun talaga yung nag-form sa amin,” she added.
Like any musician, group, or band, Baihana also has dreams of their own and for Mel, it's for the band to have another album and record new, original songs.
“Siyempre over the past few years, marami na rin kaming bagong experiences and masaya siguro i-share sa other people,” she said.
Anna, meanwhile, expressed her desire to continue the gigs and shows they had planned before the pandemic hit.
“Ang dami namin kasing plans, ang dami naming gigs supposedly to the outside of the country. Hopefully mabalik yun, and then talagang dream namin is to join more Jazz festivals,” she added.
