Veteran journalist Jessica Soho urged young Filipinos to harness their voices and digital platforms to fight injustice and drive change at the 2025 Global Youth Summit.

Award-winning journalist Jessica Soho inspired young Filipinos to take a stand against injustice and create meaningful impact through digital media and purposeful storytelling during her keynote at the 2025 Global Youth Summit at SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Addressing a crowd of over 14,000 on Sunday, Soho reflected on her four-decade journalism career, urging the youth to look beyond fleeting trends and use their platforms to spotlight stories that truly matter.

“Focus your cameras and your energy too on things that need to change,” she said, recalling how a viral video of students crossing the dangerous Tamugan River in Davao eventually led to the construction of a hanging bridge, after her team aired the story on Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho (KMJS).

Jessica also commended today's youth for boldly questioning outdated narratives, including the often-misused notion of “resilience.”

“Dahil ba nakakangiti pa rin tayo sa gitna ng kalamidad ay basta na lang natin tanggapin ang kahinaan ng sistema?”

She also looked back on her humble roots in La Union, where she was raised by a father who worked in government, a grandmother who sold goods in the market, and another who was a retired public school teacher. She lost her mother, an agriculturist, to cancer at the age of eight, a loss that, along with her upbringing, deeply influenced her passion for amplifying the voices of the underrepresented.

“Bata pa lang, mulat na ako sa mga realidad at buhay ng mga tindera at mga magsasaka,” she said.

She went on to urge the youth to turn their hardships into sources of strength, echoing National Artist Ricky Lee's advice to use their inner scars as stepping stones rather than setbacks.

“Pagtagumpayan niyo sana sa buhay ang inyong mga bubog!”

Soho emphasized that growing up in the digital age gives today's youth a distinct edge but also comes with the duty to use it wisely.

“Be responsible citizens and netizens. Criticize if you must, but elevate the level of discourse. No gutter language; no name-calling; no body shaming.”
