More than a year into the community quarantine, people are still discovering new and out of the blue hobbies.
Some are plantitos and plantitas, while others have become certified TikTokerists. Some immersed themselves into online selling and others, into mobile gaming.
Then there are people who find interest in the intricate art of cooking.
Cooking, as the Filipino elders would say, is a basic chore that every person must know. While everybody loves food, not everyone knows how to cook.
Some of the reasons why some people stay away from the kitchen include: the complex measurement of ingredients, the recipes that vary from cookbook to cookbook, the complicated rules in oven pre-heating, and of course, the great deal of mess in the kitchen.
But lately, cooking has become easier to digest (pun intended!), thanks to the continuously expanding list of content creators in the Philippines.
Imagine having a virtual cookbook--but instead of reading it, the cookbook explains to you what to do while spitting out corny jokes and hugot lines.
So to all the home cook beginners, check out this list of local vloggers who make cooking lessons as easy as 1-2-3!
First off the list is our favorite ninong, Ryan Morales or more popularly known as Ninong Ry.
Ninong Ry started his vlogging career in 2020. He became famous for his unconventional style of cooking and vlogging.
He posted several vlogs in the "3-ways" category, where he presented three different ways of cooking a certain dish or meat.
When showing techniques in cooking, Ninong Ry also explains the science behind it. One of the most mentioned lessons in his vlogs is the "maillard reaction" that equates to British chef Gordon Ramsay's "no color, no flavor" assertion.
He also appeared in GMA Public Affairs shows like Brigada and Pinas Sarap.
Of course, the original food vlogger and blogger--Vanjo Merano a.k.a. Panlasang Pinoy.
Vanjo started posting cooking vlogs and blogs way, way before YouTube dominated our Internet experience.
Apparently, when he came to Chicago as an IT professional, he found out that the Filipino food was not well-represented there. Thus, the birth of PanlasangPinoy.com.
He still remains to be the top food blogger with almost 5 million subscribers on YouTube. His most popular videos are about making leche flan, lechon kawali, bistek tagalog, crispy fried chicken, and maja blanca.
If you're a legit beginner with no idea how to even switch on a stove, we highly suggest you start here.
Chef RV Manabat also started vlogging in 2020. He has his own restaurant and cafe, two published books, but he still managed his way to the content creation industry.
Why? Because of his love of teaching.
Chef RV currently has 730,000 subscribers (or students) on YouTube. His most popular video is his own recipe of chocolate chip cookies.
He teaches in a soft-spoken manner and always translates technicalities into common terms. He also butts in jokes and hugot lines in the middle of cooking.
Watching Chef RV is like taking culinary lessons sans tuition. He gives all the tips and tricks away for free.
Again, because of his love of teaching.
True to her alias, Connh Cruz is known for innovative and modern ways of cooking traditional local dishes. One of her top videos on YouTube is her recipe of "Easy Cheesy Menudo" where she combined old and modern styles of cooking the said Filipino dish.
She also posts "pang-negosyo recipes" where she shares ideas for small food businesses.
Recently, she was featured in Pinas Sarap.
FEATR was previously Erwan Heusaff's YouTube channel. According to the channel's launch video three months ago, Erwan and his team rebranded to FEATR to give way to "more food, more sights, more friends, and more stories."
One of the channel's newly created series is "Fiesta in a Box" where they invite guests to cook dishes that symbolize Filipino festivals.
In the series, not only do they teach the guest contenders how to cook a certain dish, but they also dive deep into the famous festivals in the Philippines through showing a video presentation of it.
So go to FEATR if you (a) want to learn more about local fiestas, (b) learn how to cook local dishes, and (3) watch celebrity guests freak out while cooking, just like what happened to couple Solenn Heussaff and Nico Bolzico's Fiesta in a Box episode.
Happy cooking!
