Liza Soberano and Grammy-winning singer-songwriter H.E.R. are the cover stars of Vogue Philippines' August 2026 special edition, released ahead of the premiere of DreamWorks Animation's Forgotten Island.
Unveiled on August 1 under the theme "Untold Stories: The Roots That Lead Us Home," the issue spotlights the upcoming animated film and its celebration of Filipino mythology, culture, and identity.
In announcing the cover, the magazine described Forgotten Island as a milestone for Filipino storytelling, noting that generations of audiences have grown up with myths from other cultures while local folklore largely remained rooted in oral tradition. The publication said the film offers a chance for Filipino legends to reach a wider global audience.
The cover story features Liza and H.E.R., alongside fellow cast members Lea Salonga and Dolly de Leon, as they discuss representation, heritage, and what it means to help bring DreamWorks' first Filipino-centered animated feature to life.
For Liza, voicing Raissa became especially meaningful because it echoed her own journey of adjusting to life after relocating from Manila to Los Angeles.
“I was really yearning. I was yearning because I missed home. I missed being around family and the people that I love, and just being around the culture.”
She also reflected on collaborating with an all-Filipino voice cast, saying there was an instant sense of connection among everyone involved.
“I feel like when you meet another Filipino in the same industry as you, you're always just clicking right away.”
Liza added that working with acclaimed artists like Lea Salonga and H.E.R. was something she never imagined would happen.
“I never in my wildest dreams would have imagined I'd be with Lea Salonga in a project. I never would have imagined that I'd be doing a song with H.E.R.”
Meanwhile, H.E.R., whose real name is Gabi Wilson, shared that discovering DreamWorks was developing a film inspired by Filipino culture immediately drew her to the project.
“It was a dream come true for me. It's like one of those full circle moments where all the stars align.”
The Grammy winner also said voice acting gave her a different kind of creative freedom compared to making music.
“In the booth, it was just straight play... It felt like my inner child was alive and that's something that I love doing, keeping my inner child alive.”
Lea Salonga and Dolly de Leon likewise revealed they signed on without hesitation because of the opportunity to help tell a story rooted in Filipino culture.
“When they first approached me about the project, of course, I got really, really excited because I don't think a specifically Filipino story has ever been told like this,” Lea said.
Dolly echoed the sentiment, saying DreamWorks' involvement and the film's cultural focus were enough for her to immediately accept the role.
The films follows best friends Jo (voiced by H.E.R.) and Raissa (voiced by Liza), who find themselves trapped on the enchanted island of Nakali, where returning home may come at the cost of their most precious memories.
Forgotten Island is scheduled to premiere in Philippine cinemas on September 23.
