With his fit physique and confident smile, who would've thought that singer-songwriter Sam Hashimoto was once a victim of bullying?
GMANetwork.com caught up with Sam at the launch of Skechers Philippines' new line where he talked about his inspiring fitness transformation story.
"Honestly, when I was growing up, I was really fat as a kid and I wasn't the most attractive guy. It was really hard for me, especially getting bullied, I went to a very depressive state," recalled Sam, who was born and raised in Hawaii.
"I thought to myself, 'If I can't really work on what's going on with me inside, maybe if I change how I feel about myself on the outside, eventually, [how I feel] inside will catch up.' So I really used working out, health, and fitness as therapy."
The singer-model also shared a few tips to other people who want to start their own fitness journey.
According to Sam, "Well I know at first, it's really hard to get started because [they may be thinking] 'I don't know what to do, people are gonna look at me like I don't know.'
"And honestly, nobody really does that in the gym, especially if I can see that they're working hard and they're new, I don't judge them. It's more like 'Wow, good for you, keep it up!'
"Just get started and keep at it. It's really just all in their head."
Mr. Guam 2017 added that YouTube and health websites also played an important role in his weight loss story.
"Go online, look on YouTube, that's how I started. I was just on YouTube a lot and I read a bunch of articles and just copying and asking.
"It's okay to ask people in there, a lot of people are really friendly, especially people that work at the gym, if you talk to them, they'll be glad to help you out."
Sam offered sound and realistic advice to those who are struggling with their diet.
"Try to stay away from sugar, dairy, and fried food, don't have to be super strict but if you stay away from those, generally you'll be okay. Rice isn't bad!
"You can eat rice, you can eat carbs, it's fine."
