Find out why Maxene Magalona had a "cool-off" period with her family.

In recent years, actress and healing advocate Maxene Magalona was reported to not be on good terms with her family, more specifically with her mom Pia and her sister Saab.

Maxene previously revealed how she struggled with her mental health and in the latest episode of the Updated with Nelson Canlas podcast, she shared that keeping a “healthy distance” from her family helped with her healing journey.

“Part of the healing journey is cutting ties with relationships, kahit family pa 'yan, na hindi na nakakabuti para sa inyong pareho, para sa inyong dalawa. I kept a healthy distance from my family for a while so that I can find myself, so that I can understand myself, saan nanggagaling 'yung pain,” she said.

Maxene clarified that she's not blaming her family for her pain, but that she learned that their close relationship made them a co-dependent family. She added that as people become adults, it is important to “break away for a while” to find and know themselves better.

“Even if it was a painful decision, it was one of the most painful things, Nelson, for me to stay away muna from my family, it was very much needed,” she said.

Maxene also mentioned that it was the advice of her psychiatrist, which she explained to Pia and Saab.

“Siyempre, at the beginning lahat galit pa. And then later on, nung nahimasmasan na lahat, naintindihan na rin namin na 'ay okay din palang mag-cool off.' Minsan sa relationship kailangan natin mag-cool off. Ganun 'yung nangyari,” she said.

“Na-appreciate namin 'yung isa't isa on a deeper level kasi may absence 'di ba, absence makes the heart grow fonder. So dahil we took some time apart, mas na-miss at na-appreciate namin 'yung isa't isa,” Maxene continued.

Maxene shared that she and Saab are on good terms after reconnecting last year. She also revealed that they live close to each other and often see and visit her sister and her kids.

“And then even my mom, nagkita kami sa cemetery for my dad's 15th death anniversary. Okay kami. Kumbaga, time was lost but no love was lost. Nandiyan pa rin,” she said.

Maxene also agreed that time also healed whatever wounds she and her family had.

“I am here to say, for those listening, and nag-iisip sila if they can cut ties with their family, kung sa tingin ninyo, kailangan na kailangan na gawin ninyo, kasi later on, God will bring you back together when it's time. You have to trust that. You have to trust that,” she said.
