Migs Almendras says he has learned to embrace being typecast as he continues to take on BL projects, including the upcoming 'Dulo't Dulo.'

Migs Almendras is set to star in another vertical series.

In the boys' love drama Dulo't Dulo (sinulat para mag wakas), Migs will be paired with fellow actor Sky Quizon. The series will be available on the new streaming platform Kaya Flix.

According to Migs, he has been gradually adjusting to working on vertical projects. Before this, he starred in the web series Almost Lovers with Karina Bautista.

“I think the adjustment for me really is knowing your limits,” he told GMANetwork.com in an interview following the recent launch of Kaya Flix.

The Sparkle actor continued, “Kasi, number one, the script itself is very different. 'Pag verticals ka, they always write in such a way na malinaw sa kanila, ito yung cutting point. Hindi siya for a one long form na isang mahaba na talagang at the end of the entirety, ito yung talagang yung ending or cliffhanger mo sa dulo.

“The dialogue is very compressed, that's one. You have to make each word count. And also, it has to be precise. Hindi ka puwedeng sumobra sa movement. It eats seconds for an episode.”

The shift toward producing more vertical series has become increasingly noticeable. However, Migs believes these projects should not be compared with the traditional way of producing drama series.

“Verticals were made for a particular demographic or a particular audience.

“Normally, kung talagang nagko-commute ka, nasa bus ka or whatever, [hawak] mo 'yan; or naglalakad ka, mas madali siya. Very quick consumption siya. And, that being said, ibig sabihin, you have to really be direct to the point, no dillydallies.

“Meanwhile, a 13-minute episode allows you to flesh out more characters. So talagang, both have pros and cons and to compare one to another is very unfair for both media.”

On being typecast as a BL actor

Dulo't Dulo is just one of the many BL series Migs has been part of. Because of this, he said he is no longer concerned about being typecast as a BL actor.

“Ako na-boxing, nandun na ako,” he joked.

“I think, for me, sa dami naman nagawa ko… Kung kailan akong ayoko na, doon naman ako yung hinahatak pabalik. Salamat po. Thank you at naaalala n'yo ako.

“Personally, I'm not afraid of being typecast. If you have it, you use it to your advantage; it's a job. So for me, I'm not really too keen on it. If it's a good story, if it's a good character, I will take it. I don't care about the gender; I don't care about other details.

“Sa akin naman talaga, is the story good, and is the pay good.”

He added, “I think more than anything else, the actors and actresses should not be afraid of getting typecast. What really matters is, are you doing a good job in terms of portraying something? May pinupunta mo yung pagganap mo, whether it's a queer or a congresswoman.

“This is really about the material and the objective of the material. What story it's representing. So I think more than anything else, being afraid to get typecast or not…

“But I'm not afraid to admit this. When I was younger, of course I was afraid to be typecast. But as you grow older, you age, and you enjoy the different roles; you know what, just have fun. Enjoy.”

Aside from acting, Migs has also been taking on more hosting gigs. GMANetwork.com asked him which he currently prefers between hosting and acting.

Migs quickly answered, “Hosting.”

The Communication graduate explained, “I think nung twenties ako all the way to thirties, I enjoyed portraying different roles and na-enjoy ko. But when you start to hit your thirties life, you start to think that you're looking for more stable things.

“And the reason why I prefer hosting talaga is because, at least at some point in time, I can always switch to corporate communication. And I can actually use my degree kaya mas gusto ko pa rin ang hosting.”
