“Kean, hindi ito 'yung gusto kong mangyari.” Mimiyuuuh recalled having the guts to disagree with Kean Cipriano in their first project together. Find out how the Callalily frontman and OC Records CEO took this rejection in this article.

Internet sensation and now recording artist Mimiyuuuh recalled how she thumbed down Kean Cipriano's original idea for her first single “Drink Your Water Bitch.”

Kean met Mimiyuuuh during an event last year and there he offered her the possibility of starting her music career. While the internet star had hesitations out of her huge respect for the OPM industry, the Callalily frontman was only further convinced about her genuine talent and artistry.

In September 2020, Mimiyuuuh was introduced as one of OC Records' artists. She shared during the entertainment company's virtual media conference on January 27, “Alam niyo po, sobrang happy po ako to be collaborating and working po with OC Records kasi sobrang open po talaga nila to a lot of suggestions. At the same time, parang mas nire-respect nila 'yung ano mo, 'yung vision mo ba sa song.”

Mimiyuuuh proved this when she discussed her idea with Kean for her first single.

The singer-actor began narrating, “I was thinking Mimiyuuuh is an internet sensation and on the mainstream side of things 'di ba, so sabi ko, 'Sige, gawa ako ng demo.' Pero 'yung ginawa kong demo, very pop, very parang mainstream approach. Tapos nung binigay ko sa kanya, sabi niya, 'Kean, hindi ito 'yung gusto kong mangyari.'

“Natuwa lang ako kasi nung sinabi niya na 'Ay, hindi 'yan 'yung gusto ko,' positive sa akin eh. Ni-take ko siya positively. Sabi ko, 'Uy, gusto ko na hindi niya gusto kasi ibig sabihin alam nung artist kung ano 'yung gusto niyang mangyari.

Mimiyuuuh wanted more bass in her song. Further she wanted to give a salute to the music from her youth.

Chynna Ortaleza, who co-founded OC Records and holds the position as its Vice President, added, saying, “Nakakatuwa kasi Mimi's really genuine. So nung sinasabi niya nga sa amin kung ano 'yung gusto niyang maging like first single, natuwa ako na sinasabi niya na 'I actually want to honor my roots. Kung ano 'yung pinapakinggan ko nung bata ako, gusto ko makagawa ako ng track na ganun. So that's how we came up with “Drink Your Water Bitch.”

So despite the quarantine against COVID-19, Mimiyuuuh released her first single. She groped her way to recording “Drink Your Water Bitch” from her home, and in a remote setup, collaborated with Kean as well as with other arrangers and producers.

Launching her first-ever track was undeniably a validating and empowering moment for the internet star.

She said, “Sobrang refreshing po kasi parang nae-express ko po 'yung creativity ko in a lot of ways, like singing, making tracks, making lyrics. At the same time, nagba-vlog po. And parang 'yun nga po, I really don't underestimate myself. Feeling ko po kaya ko lahat

“Dapat ganun and mindset lahat ng kabataan ngayon. Dapat kaya mo lahat. Never ever underestimate yourself.”

While Mimiyuuuh cannot determine yet what her next project is with OC Records, she is confident that this new experience is only the start of bigger discoveries.

“I never stop learning po. So parang may mga bagay right now na pumapatok kasi nga po very Mimi, pero ako po I don't settle for less. Parang I want more, I want to grow pa po. So I think, let's see in the future baka po 'di ba umiyak-iyak na po ako, hindi na po ako nagpapatawa sa vlog.”

She also hopes to bring this positive message to other aspiring artists and dreamers.

She concluded, saying, “Basta alam niyo lang, just be you. But you know 'yung mga critic naman talaga diyan, hindi naman po talaga mawawala, you know what I'm saying. So parang may mga critic po na negative and may mga critic po na positive. So ikaw na po ang bahala kung saan ka magfo-focus 'di ba. Kung magfo-focus ka po sa mga negativity, parang it will just hinder you from creating what you really want. So 'di ba, just focus on yourself. Focus doon sa positive comments and all, and you know, just be you 'di ba. I-unleash mo 'yung creativity mo.

“'Di ba music kasi it's an art. Parang lahat ng art, hindi naa-appreciate ng lahat ng tao. So ang mahalaga dapat ma-appreciate mo muna 'yung sarili mong art bago ka ma-appreciate ng ibang tao.”
