Netflix, Squid Game 2

Netflix reacts to complaints about 'Squid Game' lacking women in its main cast.

Netflix has released a teaser for hit series Squid Game Season 2, while fans clamored for the upcoming new season, many noticed the lack of female cast.

On June 18, Netflix Korea showed the new cast for Season 2. Among the new cast members unveiled were Yim Siwan, Kang Ha-neul, The Glory actor Park Sung-hoon, and Yang Dong-geun.

The newly announced actors join the returning cast members from Season 1, namely, Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-joon, and Gong Yoo. Since all eight actors featured in the video are male, this led to criticism from fans worldwide.

News outlets claimed fans of the show were disappointed with the absence of a female cast in the roster of new actors revealed.

AllKpop reported comments from netizens. One said, "They should reveal all at once, why are they saying they can't disclose all the casting?" "I'm going to wait. I don't think the director would forget to cast female actors," said another. "Jung Ho Yeon and Lee Yoo Mi became so successful through season 1, there's no way they would leave out female actors," the other commented.

In response to the questions about the cast, an insider from Netflix reportedly told The Hankyoreh newspaper on June 19, "We cannot disclose at this time whether female actors will appear in Season 2 of Squid Game. Further casting details will be revealed soon."

In Squid Game Season 1, female stars gained huge international success and popularity, and also received multiple awards. Jung Ho-yeon, who portrayed Sae Byuk, won the Best Actress Award at the Actors Guild of America (SAG) Awards in February of the previous year. In March of the same year, she also received the prestigious Critics' Choice Super Awards for Best Actress.

Lee Yoo Mi, who played Ji Young, made history by winning the Best Actress award at the Emmy Awards last September. She became the first non-English-speaking drama actress and the first Korean actress to achieve such a feat.

Squid Game Season 2 is directed by Hwang Dong Hyuk, and is set to begin filming in the latter half of this year.
