Barbie Forteza and Derrick Monasterio on their real-life half sisters

The Half Sisters actors Barbie Forteza and Derrick Monasterio deal with half sisters on and off the camera.
Barbie Forteza plays the role of Diana Alcantara, one of the half sisters who is despised by the father she recognizes. Derrick Monasterio comes to her rescue in the character of Sebastian “Baste” Torres, her confidante who soon falls in love with her.
While both characters deal with the experiences of a struggling half sister in GMA’s newest Afternoon Primetime drama series, they know too well how it feels to be living with half sisters in real life.
In an interview with GMANetwork.com, Barbie revealed that she has an older half sister who resides abroad. While the distance allowed her to meet her only once, the Kapuso teen actress enthusiastically said they shared good bonding moments like a true family.
“Sobrang bait, sobrang approachable. Kasi 'di ba 'pag mga galing ibang bansa, parang nakakailang 'di ba, kasi iba ‘yung pagpapalaki eh. [Pero] hindi, nandun lahat [‘yung pakikisama]. Pinipilit niya mag-Tagalog, pinipilit niya kausapin si Daddy,” Barbie said.
“Alam mo ‘yun parang ang tagal na naming nagkikita, ang tagal na namin magkakilala pero yun ‘yung first na pagkikita naming dalawa kaya nakakatuwa,” she continued.
Derrick also admitted, “Meron akong dalawang sisters na half-sisters ko lang, sa mom lang... Ang tingin ko sa kanila as in totoong buong kapatid kasi sabay-sabay naman kami lumaki. Kaya walang issue sa akin 'yun.”
He explained that having good familial relationships depends mostly on the parent’s child-rearing at home.
“Actually okay lang po sa akin kasi nasa pagpapalaki lang din 'yan ng magulang. Kaya lang siguro sila nag-aaway kasi may favoritism, may kinakampihan. Pero sa akin, okay lang,” Derrick said, referring to the characters in The Half Sisters.
Asked if Barbie and Derrick might find themselves in a situation similar to the drama series’ plot of having a half-sibling through the phenomenon of hetero-paternal superfecundation, the two teen stars said they will be more like Diana’s character.
“Wala talagang kaso sa akin. Ako yung magiging Barbie na parang taga-ayos ng lahat,” Derrick said.
Likewise, Barbie would accept her half-sister but added, “Siguro umpisa pa lang magdududa na ako kasi wala naman talagang Tatay, wala namang magulang na iibahin yung trato sa’yo kung anak ka talaga.”
