Mosang is Miss Independent

By MERYL LIGUNAS

From the streets of Tondo to television screens, Maria Alilia Bagio or more commonly known as Mosang, sure has gone a long way.

Mosang the actress

Through the help of acclaimed director Wenn Deramas, she has become a familiar name and face in Philippine show business because of her frequent portrayal of maid roles. She values each project given to her and acknowledges that there are no small roles in showbiz.

She has also done different movies and portrayed the roles of a midwife and a barangay captain, among others. “Para sa akin, natutuwa ako kasi naipapakita [kong I] can do [different] things,” she said.

Mosang the Tondo girl

Before being in show business, she was a simple girl who grew up in the crazy and chaotic streets of Tondo. Ironically, it is where she found peace and the people whom she could trust for a lifetime.

She is friends with an elder who would allow her to pay her dues in the sari-sari store at a later time. She is also close with her mom’s best friend who taught her how to take care of pigs.

Mosang the businesswoman

Because of the instability of show business, Mosang also gets herself busy with her small tapsihan (eatery) where she is assisted by her cousin Jonel. “Kapag wala akong taping, pumupunta ako dito sa tapsihan ko. [Pumupunta ako] hangga’t kaya ng schedule ko,” she shared.

Way before putting up the tapsihan, she showed her entrepreneurial spirit by selling banana-cue and turon even if she was pregnant.

Mosang the mother

To her, the best hat she wears is that of a mother. “I’m very lucky. I’m blessed kasi mabait 'yung anak ko,” she declared. Her son Elijah is now in high school and makes her proud every day. There was a time, however, when Mosang got worried when he faced a near-death experience when he was only eight months old.

Mosang, who felt helpless, resorted to prayer saying, “Lord, kawawa naman… Kung kukunin mo, kunin mo na. Pero kung ibibigay mo [siya] sa ‘kin, tulungan mo ko.”

In everything that she has gone through, Mosang always has people whom she can count on. Her redefining of independence doesn’t discount the help of other people, but rather reinforces strength within one’s self and the urge to give back.

“Huwag kang mag-gi-give up,” she said. “Saka 'yung pinaka-noble na magagawa mo sa buhay mo [ay] sakripisyo. Kaya minsan, kailangan mong magsakripisyo, hindi para may ma-achieve ka, kung hindi para may magawa ka [para] sa ibang tao. 'Yun itself is isang malaking bagay na sa success story mo.”
