Jo Koy has responded to the backlash he received after his Golden Globes 2023 hosting stint

Comedian Jo Koy made history as the first Filipino-American to host the Golden Globes. However, his hosting was met with criticisms and most of his jokes fell short. Celebrities in attendance and viewers alike were not impressed with his hosting debut of the awards ceremony.

Jo Koy mentioned during his monologue that he got the hosting duty 10 days before the ceremony, giving him less than two weeks to prepare.

“The minute I signed the contract… I locked myself in a room and started binge-watching everything. While my family was clinking champagne glasses and ringing in the New Year, I was watching Oppenheimer."

Jo Koy told Good Morning America that he would be lying if he said the negative comments didn't hurt.

“You know, I'd be lying if I said it doesn't hurt. I hit a little moment there where I was just like, hosting is just, it's a tough gig. And, yes, I am a stand-up comic. With the hosting position, it's a different style.”

“We just had 10 days to try and write something for this monologue. It was a crash course. And, you know, I feel bad but I gotta still say that I loved what I did.”

While Jo Koy drew laughter for his jokes about Meryl Streep and Robert De Niro, his comparison of movies Oppenheimer and Barbie were heavily criticized.

“Oppenheimer and Barbie are competing for cinematic box office achievements. Oppenheimer is based on a 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project. And Barbie is on a plastic doll with big boobies.” Jo Koy said.

The Barbie cast and crew including the film's director Greta Gerwig were clearly not amused with the comparison.

Viewers called out Jo Koy for the joke, displeased with how the Barbie movie was described.

Jo Koy also made a joke about Taylor Swift being seen frequently at NFL games, but it also failed to land. Taylor Swift has been attending NFL games to show support for footballer boyfriend Travis Kelce.

“The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL?” Koy said. “At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift.”

Jo Koy told Entertainment Tonight that his Taylor Swift joke was about the more frequent use of cutaway shots in NFL broadcasts compared to the Golden Globes.

“Aww, man, it was cute. I was just saying it was cute, I was just saying it's less cutaways, that's all.”
