Sixteen-year-old Kobe Paras is set to compete for the Philippine team in the FIBA Asia Under 18 Slam Dunk contest to be held in Doha, Qatar from August 19 to 28.

The Sunday All Stars host and the son of former PBA star Benjie Paras is currently based in the United States to play for the Cathedral High School in Los Angeles, California.

Benjie told Startalk that he is thankful that Kobe’s school permitted him to take part in the tournament despite conflicts in schedule.

“May ibang competition kasi sila. Ang problema lang nagkaroon ng conflict sa mga tournaments. Napakiusapan lang if he can extend for another two weeks to play for the (Philippine) national team in Doha,” he said.

More than anything, the actor is proud of Kobe, and his older son Andre, for everything they’ve accomplished and how they are able to remain grounded.

“I’m really happy for them. I’m really proud and so blessed na nagkaroon ako ng [mga] anak na tulad nila dahil aside from the talent na meron sila ay mababait sila,” he added.

Andre, the brother and best friend of Kobe, takes pride in Kobe’s achievements but admitted that he wishes that he could fly home sooner.

“It’s been eight months or seven months. I just can’t wait to see him and give him a hug,” Andre said.
