
In memory and honor of their remarkable contributions to their respective industries, Malacañan Palace announced that four beloved Filipina personalities, who all passed away recently, will be posthumously awarded with the Presidential Medal of Merit.
On Wednesday, April 23, the Palace confirmed that the prestigious award will be bestowed upon Nora Aunor, Pilita Corrales, Margarita Fores, and Gloria Romero. The Presidential Medal of Merit serves as the highest recognition conferred by a Philippine president to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to nation-building.
"The event is confirmed,” Palace Press Officer Atty. Claire Castro briefly told the media.
The awarding ceremony is scheduled to be held on May 4.
National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts Nora Aunor, passed away on April 16 due to acute respiratory failure. She was laid to rest at the Libingan ng mga Bayani on April 22, which President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared as a Day of National Mourning in her honor. Nora, widely known as the "Superstar," left a lasting mark on Philippine cinema and television with iconic works such as her 1982 film Himala.
Meanwhile, Asia's Queen of Songs Pilita Corrales passed away on April 12. She enjoyed a stellar career spanning over six decades, beloved for her distinct vocal style and her signature "backbend" during performances. Pilita was a true icon whose influence shaped the landscape of Original Pilipino Music (OPM). With more than 135 albums she recorded in various languages, including Filipino, English, Spanish, and Cebuano.
Well-known chef Margarita Fores also left an incredible mark in the culinary world. She was named Asia's Best Female Chef in 2016 and known for establishing acclaimed restaurants like Cibo, Lusso, and Grace Park. Margarita passed away on February 11 in Hong Kong due to cardiac arrest. Many admirers visited the public viewing of her wake to pay their respects.
Lastly, fans mourned the loss of veteran actress Gloria Romero who passed away on January 25. With a career spanning over 70 years, Gloria endeared herself to generations of Filipinos and earned multiple acting awards for her memorable performances in both film and television.
