The legal dispute between K-pop girl group NewJeans and their agency ADOR has intensified.
On May 30, 2025, the Seoul Central District Court ruled that each member of NewJeans must pay a penalty of 1 billion won (approximately $730,000) for every unauthorized entertainment activity conducted without ADOR's prior approval.
This decision enforces a stricter ban on the group's independent activities, following a previous injunction issued on March 21, 2025, which prohibited the members from engaging in entertainment activities outside of ADOR's purview . The court's latest ruling introduces a penalty clause to ensure compliance, requiring each member to pay the specified amount for each violation.
The conflict began in November 2024 when NewJeans declared their contract with ADOR void, citing a breach of trust and mismanagement . Despite the court's rulings, the group has continued to challenge the validity of their exclusive contract, arguing that the breakdown in trust justifies its termination .
In response to the May 30 ruling, NewJeans stated that the court's decision is a temporary measure related to the earlier injunction and is not part of their ongoing appeal against the initial ruling . The next hearing in this legal battle is scheduled for June 5, 2025, which may significantly impact the group's future in the entertainment industry.
