Meet K-pop supergroup SuperM

SuperM

Before the official announcement of their debut, rumors of SM Entertainment planning to debut a “K-pop Super Boy Band” made headlines in Korea. It was later confirmed by founder Lee Soo-man when he said they'll be going by the name SuperM. The “M” stands for both matrix and master, with each member being an established star in their own respective K-pop groups.

Taemin

Lee Taemin is the most active artist in SuperM. He had since been with SM Entertainment at the age of 14 and debuted as a member of SHINee in May 2008.

In the variety show 'Knowing Brothers,' he introduced himself as the “mamu” or the main multiplayer given his abilities to sing, act, and perform on stage.

Baekhyun

Byun Baekhyun began training under SM Entertainment in 2011 and debuted a year later under the group EXO. He is the leader and main vocal of the SuperM.

Kai

Another EXO member debuting in SuperM is Kim Jong-in or KAI. He is the main dancer of the group thanks to his background in ballet, jazz, hip-hop, and popping and locking. Also, can we talk about abs?

Taeyong

Lee Tae-yon g or Taeyong is the leader of the boy band NCT. He made his debut in 2016 in the group's first sub-unit NCT U. In 2019, Taeyong debuted as a member of SuperM where he takes the title of center in the group because he “gives his shine in the center.”

Ten

Cittaphon Leechaiyapornkul, known professionally as Ten, is a Thai singer and dancer of Chinese descent. He is part of the boy group NCT and NCT U in 2016 but is more active in the boy group WayV.

Lucas

Hong Kong rapper Wong Yuk-hei, better known by his mononym Lucas, is also a member of NCT and its sub-units NCT U and WayV. In SuperM, Lucas is the main visual thanks to his good looks and height.

Mark

Canadian member Mark Lee, known professionally as Mark, is also a member of NCT and its sub-units NCT U, NCT 127, and NCT Dream. When SuperM was formed, Mark took on the title of main rapper and the group's “maknae” or youngest member.

'Jopping' 

When they made their debut on October 4, they released their self-titled EP and lead single titled “Jopping.” The EP debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart while “Jopping” is among Billboard's Critics' picks of 25 Best K-pop Songs of the year.

Ellen DeGeneres Show and World Tour

They made their television debut on 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show' on October 9 where they showed the American talk show host the key move of their choreography for “Jopping.” The group then embarked on their first tour and sold back-to-back concerts in North America, Latin America, and Europe.

Korean Air

In November 2019, SuperM was announced as the global ambassador for Korean Air where they were featured in a safety video.

"With You"

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the group participated in an online concert series to support the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund from the World Health Organization. The group performed an unreleased song titled “With You.”

Beyond Live

In April 2020, SuperM was part of the first online-dedicated live concert series called “Beyond Live” jointly organized by SM Entertainment and Naver. During the concert, they performed songs from their EP and new tracks from their upcoming album. The revenue from their online concert has been estimated to be around $2 million.

'100'

In August 2020, the group announced their first studio album titled “Super One.” The album release was preceded by the pre-release single “100.”

'Tiger Inside'

Following “100” is their second pre-release single titled “Tiger Inside” which became the group's first song to enter the Gaon Digital Chart.

Marvel

Championing their title as the “Avengers of K-pop” SuperM revealed its collaboration with Marvel for a limited edition merchandise series.

'One (Monster and Infinity)'

Following their collaboration, they also released the music video for their song “One (Monster and Infinity).”

Super One

On September 25, SuperM released their first studio album titled “Super One.” The album contains 15 tracks and has received generally positive reviews from critics. The physical edition of the album comes in five versions: two group shots and three-unit versions.

On October 5, Billboard announced that “Super One” debuted at No. 2 on their Top 200 Albums Chart, the weekly ranking of the most popular albums in the United States.

2020 awards

The year 2020 was memorable for the Avengers of K-Pop despite the COVID-19 pandemic. The K-pop group bagged the Seoul Mayor's Award in the 2020 Newsis K-EXPO.

WHO

The K-pop group also used their social media power to spread awareness about mental health. Back in October 2020, SuperM joined the Big Event for Mental Health organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) to put the spotlight on the international chronic under-investment in mental health.

New Year's Day 2021

SuperM showcased their incredible talent during the SM Entertainment's New Year's Day concert “SMTown Live: Culture Humanity,” which was streamed on various social media platforms.

We DO

SuperM's latest single "We DO" is a collaboration with leading insurance company Prudential Corporation Asia. In a statement released by SM Entertainment, this campaign song was produced to “spread positive energy by placing importance on mental health as well as physical health.”

#Their3rdYearJopping

Despite being on hiatus for more than a year now, fans all over the world celebrate SuperM's third anniversary as a K-pop boy group under SM Entertainment. The 7-member band debuted last October 4, 2019, and comprises the powerhouse of various K-pop boy group's under SM.

Taeyong and Mark

Although SuperM is on a break, NCT 127's Taeyong and Mark are booked and busy as they continue their “Neo City: The Link” world tour. Last September, the two, along with other members of NCT 127 visited the Philippines and performed in front of their Filipino fans.

SHINee's Taemin, on the other hand, is currently completing his military service and will be discharged in March 2023.

EXO's Kai is also busy as he will be having three different concerts this October 2022. On October 8, the singer is set to perform for the “2022 Mokpo Music Play,” on October 9 for the “2022 Powerful Daegu K-POP Concert Re;Start,” and on October 22 for the “2022 Awesome Music Festival.”
