Fake social media ads using celebrities

There have been numerous cases already about celebrities and social media personalities being alarmed over fake product advertisements using their names and photos without consent.

'Widows' War' actress Carla Abellana, who was one of the victims of these scams, vowed to take legal action against those personalities behind an online advertisement of a brand, which she doesn't even endorse.

In April 2023, Carla informed the public via her post on Instagram Story to not buy the product and warned that she would take the necessary steps to punish those using her name for these fake online ads.

Meanwhile in June 2023, former actor and Senator Jinggoy Estrada filed Resolution No. 666 urging the Senate to investigate these incidents.

"The circulation and proliferation of fraudulent online advertisements are clear and blatant violations of the Consumer Act which penalizes dissemination of deceptive and misleading advertisements,"

Senator Estrada added, "There is an urgent need to protect consumers against the consumption of unregistered and potentially harmful food and health products through strict enforcement of the provisions of the Consumer Act and regulation of fraudulent advertisement in social media platforms,"

Here are some of the local celebrities who fell victim to unauthorized use of their names for false social media advertisements:
