Daniel’s Dilemma

A seasoned actor, Daniel Fernando has been portraying different roles since he started in show business. Now part of Mga Mata ni Anghelita , Daniel gives another moving performance despite the size of his role. Text by Loretta G. Ramirez Playing a minor part in the primetime show Mga Mata ni Anghelita is no hindrance for this veteran actor. Daniel is in fact happy to be a part of this Pinoy classic and quite thrilled to talk about his role. “Isa, akong kapitan del barrio. Punong Barangay na siya 'yung nagpaliwanag at nagbigay ng paniniwala sa mga tao sa Sta. Maria na si Angelita ay salot. Ako 'yung kung baga … Ako 'yung nagbigay hinagpis kay Angelita. Ako 'yung nagstart ng idea na kung 'di dahil sa kanya hindi magka-malas malas 'yung lugar namin, 'di nagkaroon ng mga problema,” describes Daniel about his role in the show. He acknowledges that there are good and bad characters in the story but his character does not belong to either; a dilemma that he tries to sort out while he describes his character further. “Actually ang tingin ko kay Kapitan Isaac (his character’s name) is isang kapitan na tapat. Tapat doon sa panunungkulan niya. Ayaw ng lokohan, Ayaw ng nakawan. Wala pa naman siyang pinakikita rito na corrupt siya. Ang sa kanya lang, ayaw niya ng kamalasan. Ayaw niya 'yung may nangyayari sa barangay niya na kaguluhan. Mabagsik, strikto, matapang, medyo may pagkamasama lang 'yung ugali” adds Daniel. Daniel’s character is in other words cannot be classified as mainly good or predominantly evil. It is in fact a borderline role where in one thing is sure, he only wants to fulfill his responsibility as a public servant and will do anything to preserve the peace and tranquility of Sta. Maria. He maybe superstitious but he believes in his heart that he is actually serving the greater good. “Si Kapitan Isaac matapang talaga eh. Striktong, matapang na medyo may pagka walang hiya. Ang tingin ko hindi naman siya ganoong kasama. Pero hindi siya 'yung basta-basta maniniwala sa ganoon(miracles). Hindi siya basta-basta maniniwala eh." Effective in his role, Daniel does not mind if he is typecast as a shady character. He welcomes the challenge and does all that he can to do justice to the role.
