Kapuso stars shine in 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival

Films from the 5th Metro Manila Film Festival have been in theaters for three days now, and on December 27, the Gabi ng Parangal was held to recognize the best of the best, from the best movies, directors, and screenplays to the actors and actresses who made a difference.

Gabi ng Parangal is one of the highlights of the MMFF where outstanding performances, films, and technical contributions are honored.

Kapuso Drama King Dennis Trillo proved just how good an actor he is when he won the Best Actor in a Lead Role Award at the Gabi ng Parangal. The actor expressed that it was an honor to accept the award.

“Lagi ko pong sinasabi na ngayong araw ng kapaskuhan, ayaw ko na pong magpa-stress sa pakikipagkumpetensya o pakikipagpagalingan sa kahit kanino man dahil pakiramdam namin panalo na kami u'ng naipasok pa lang sa sampung entries dito sa 50th anniversary ng Metro Manila Film Fest ang Green Bones,” the actor said.

Kapuso Primetime Action Hero Ruru Madrid won the Best Supporting Actor Award for his turn in Green Bones, saying that while he was hurt by how he was always treated as an underdog and was underestimated in the past, he finally understood why those setbacks were necessary.

“I realized na kaya pala siya nangyayari sa akin, para 'pag dumating 'yung araw na ibibigay na sa akin 'yung kapalit nu'n, katulad po nito, hindi ko po ite-take for granted lahat ng 'yun kasi alam ko 'yung hirap na pinagdaanan ko bago ko makuha 'to at hindi po 'yun naging madali,” he said.

He also shared his belief that as long as you believe in yourself, and that you can do it, you will achieve your goals and dreams.

“Basta ikaw naniniwala ka sa sarili mo na kaya mo, na mararating mo ' yung pinapangarap mo basta malinis ang intensyon mo, nagpupursige ka at pinipili mo maging mabuting tao sa lahat ng pagkakataon, makakamit mo ito,” Ruru said.

GMA Pictures' MMFF entry, Green Bones took home the Best Picture Award, marking a back-to-back win with the MMFF 2023 Best Picture winner Firefly. In her speech, GMA Pictures President Annette Gozon-Valdez thanked the MMFF, its chairman, Don Artes, and the jurors for the win.

“I also want to share this award with the other nine films in this Metro Manila Film Fest because to make a film, it takes blood, sweat and tears, and resources, and talagang we really risk it all because we want to tell a story. And I hope that people listen to all these wonderful outstanding stories of these movies in this year's Metro Manila Film Festival,” she said.

Meanwhile, GMA Pictures Executive Vice President Nessa Valdellon thanked the jurors, adding that their most recent win was historic for their film studio.

“This is a very big thing for GMA Pictures. It was really our aim to bring back the glory of the film studio. 25 years ago, we won for Muro Ami, 26 years ago, we won for Jose Rizal. That was back to back, and this is back to back, Firefly and Green Bones,” she said.
