Cannes jury members share why Jaclyn Jose won Best Actress

By AEDRIANNE ACAR

The Millionaire’s Wife star Jaclyn Jose is in cloud nine as she basks in her glorious win in the prestigious 2016 Cannes.

Jaclyn bested other nominees for the Best Actress category like Hollywood stars Charlize Theron and Kristen Stewart, making her the first Filipina to win the award in the 69 year history of the film festival.

But an article from Indiewire.com reported that some critics were unhappy of the Best Actress choice. According to the report, critics were saying that Jaclyn Jose’s character in the Brillante Mendoza film Ma’ Rosa was a supporting role.

Hunger Games actor Donald Sutherland, a member of the jury, defended their choice to give Jaclyn the recognition. He said, "The critics were wrong… It's a big-time leading role."

Another jury member, French director and screenwriter Arnaud Desplechin was so moved by Jaclyn’s performance that he was quoted saying, "She broke my heart."

Other members of the jury include Laszuo Nemes, Vanessa Paradis, George Miller, Kirsten Dunst, Valeria Golino, Mads Mikkelsen, and Katayoon Shahabi.

The veteran soap opera star did not expect that her talent will be recognized in Cannes.

Jaclyn said, “I don’t know what to say. I am so surprised. I just went through having a red carpet walk with my daughter, my real life daughter (Andi Eigenmann) and my daughter in the movie also. Thank you to Cannes, thank you so much."
