Martin del Rosario learns to ignore comments about his sexuality

Over the course of his career, actor Martin del Rosario has received many negative comments. He admitted that it affected him in the beginning until he learned to stand his ground and accept that it came with the career he signed up for.

 
“[Sa una], masasaktan ka pa eh… [I would get a lot of comments] about sexuality and may mga pictures ko na ididikit ako with another [guy]. Sa akin, wala… Sa simula, syempre maapektuhan ka kasi conscious ka pa sa bashers… hanggang sa masasanay ka na at dahil ang dami daming nag-co-comment, mapapagod ka rin,” he said.
 
Martin revealed that he taught himself to transform the negative into positive. He recognized that being bothered by the bashing wouldn’t benefit him personally and professionally.
 
“Sa mga ganyan, mas matututo kang maging strong… Kung kilala mo naman yung sarili mo and alam mo naman yung ginagawa mo, ba’t ka magpapa-apekto diba? Malilimatahan pa yung craft mo. Kung may sasabihin sa ‘yo about sexuality, ililimit ko yung sarili ko from doing gay roles. No, ayaw ko ng ganun so wala, just ignore them,” he added.
 
When he receives a message or a comment that would usually hurt him, he tries to focus on the good words people tell him and puts himself around people who will help him become a better person.
 
“Siguro [some of the best comments I’ve received was] kapag sinasabihan ako na magaling yung performance ko sa isang project. It inspires me to do better. May fulfillment sa sarili mo dahil ako, pinagbubutihan ko talaga yung pag-arte kasi gusto ko yung ginagawa ko and siguro [those positive comments are] affirmation na at least natutuwa mga tao sa ginagawa ko,” he shared.
 
Being a celebrity in a time when all have access to social media has imbibed in Martin a sense of responsibility. He strives to spread positivity and turning away from hatefulness. This is something he highlights in his participation in the Bloggers’ Style Camp 2016 which campaigns against cyber-bulluing.
 
“Hindi nila alam na 'yung sinasabi nila would hurt others’ feelings. [Kaming celebrities], natuto nang mag-cope sa ganun dahil sa nature ng work namin pero if you do it sa ibang tao, mag-ma-mark talaga sa tao and pwedeng i-change 'yung buhay niya [for the worse] so dapat mag-spread ng love, not hate,” he concluded.
