Successful Desperadas

The stars aligned last December 23 as the actresses of Desperadas sashayed their way to the premiere of their movie. The four leads simply glowed as they greeted the throngs of fans that waited to see them. Text and Photos by Jason John S. Lim. Red Carpet Held off by the barriers, hundreds of fans shrieked as the Ruffa Gutierrez, Rufa Mae Quinto, Iza Calzado and Marian Rivera walked down the red carpet, flanked on both side by the adoring members of the press. All they need is love? Well, after all that love, what they needed was security!
Desperadas is all about looking for love in the right places - but the four main cast members of the movie didn’t have to look far! As each of the four beautiful women greeted their fans who had been waiting to see them and watch the movie, the crowd erupted and cheers. More so when Marian Rivera took the microphone and greeted the masses who kept screaming, “ MariMar!” Also at the premiere were friends of the actresses who came to support the Desperadas. Annabelle Rama came with her twins, Richard and Raymond. Also at the premiere were Nicole Andersson, Ana Roces, Sheryl Cruz, Donita Rose, Aiko Melendez and Bubbles Paraiso. Funny director Quark Henares even posed for a picture with one of the sponsor’s standee for Iza Calzado! And inside the cinemas, the excitement in the packed theater simmered down when the trailers began showing for the other Regal entries to this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival. But cheers erupted now and then when fans caught glimpses of their idols. Definitely not desperate Desperadas: All They Need is Love is the story of four half-sisters who each have strong personalities. All are in for a worthy lesson about love and family. The narration is by Nova Villa, who plays their mother. Ruffa Gutierrez brings to life the self-centered Isabella to perfection. As the sister whose daddy issues and lack of budgeting skills pits her against two of her half-sisters, she hides her character’s vulnerable side with glamour and style. And she plays off well against singer-actor Jay R who is her love interest in the movie. Rufa Mae Quinto is the second sister, Patricia, the sexologist whose own self-help books on sexual relationships is taking its toll on her bond with her husband, played by Wendell Ramos. Toning down the comic antics she’s most known for, Rufa Mae delivers her dialogue with a carefree attitude but manages to convey exactly what she is feeling when her scenes call for it. Iza Calzado comes on board as Stephanie, the conservative sister who wants to act out her wild side with her obstetrician husband, played by TJ Trinidad. In her role, Iza uses subtlety in delivering her one-liners - giving a different approach to comedy by taking everything more seriously. And last, but certainly not the least, Marian Rivera definitely has fun with her role as Courtney, the youngest of the sisters who designs swimsuits and undergarments. The most unique of the roles the newest It Girl has played, Courtney allows the actress to have fun with an over-the-top character who only wants to be loved by her fiancée. Marian gives Courtney a loud and tactless attitude, without losing the innocence that people can relate too.
Together, the four of them make one heck of a comedy movie with truly heart-wrenching (and heart-warming) moments that would make anyone’s heart melt. And if the crowd reaction inside the theater was anything to go by, Mother Lily Monteverde won’t have anything to worry about when the film opens on the first of January. So on the second week of the 2007 Metro Manila Film Festival, don’t miss the chance to watch Desperadas, opening on January 1 as the first salvo from Regal Films for the new year.
