WATCH: Miss International PH Mariel de Leon defends self over viral tweet on Mocha Uson

By BEA RODRIGUEZ

Miss International Philippines 2017 Mariel de Leon has been a subject of bashing ever since she voiced out her opinion on Mocha Uson, a dancer-turned-blogger and die-hard supporter of President Rodrigo Duterte appointed as Assistant Secretary of the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCCO).

The beauty queen daughter of celebrity couple Christopher de Leon and Sandy Andolong was surprised when her tweets on the appointment went viral on social media. She said on News to Go, “Actually, I wasn’t expecting it to be trending kasi naman social media for me is just a platform for your opinions.”

The outspoken 23-year-old title holder defended her right, “As a Filipina, [and] as a citizen of this country, I have opinions about our government, and the way it’s run. I think everyone has that right so I just felt like I should put it out there since now I have a voice.”

With all the flak she’s getting from the President’s supporters, Mariel seems unaffected, “I am secure with myself, and with that, no kind of negativity gets to me.”

As a public figure, she has this to say, “I respect their opinion, but of course, there’s a way to debate and argue about issues. You don’t need to insult other people, but for me, I don’t mind. They can say what they say, I’ll still voice my opinion.”
